| Ooooh... painful.... my fault... my fault.... sorry... But I'll take tabasco-laced pizza up the nose anyday over a huge mother snake while peeing in the bushes. Can you imagine the sight of a full grown man running out of the bushes with his pants around his ankles screaming like a girl. This while you're in the middle of your backswing. | |

MC, this thread is over a year old... what's your fascination with snakes? Something to do with Valentine's Day?

Any golf coaches on this forum care to comment? The ball need NOT be retrievable for relief. Yesterday's Dubai Desert Classic, one guy, Aiken I think, drove his tee shot into the top of a tree (very common when you play in Malaysia with palm trees where balls can get stuck among the branches), he was actually given a pair of binoculars by the rules officials to check if that ball was indeed his. Aiken used the binoculars to positively IDENTIFY the ball was his, and proceeded to unplayable rule. So you need not retrieve the ball, but you must be able to prove that it was your ball, and not someone else's. Of course, usually you will need to retrieve the ball in order to identify it, unless you carry a pair of powerful binoculars in your bag.

| That's why I try to steer the discussion back from snakes and pissing to flower bed relief. It was such a huge detour! | |

| We can apply the logic rule here where you believe ball went into flower bed. The point of allowing free drop is so that golfers don't damage the flowers as they attempt to go in to get at the ball.
Similarly if ball land beside a resting croc or rattle snake logically you can't be expected to attempt retrieve the ball putting life and limps at risk.
Interpreting rules means more than just reading the words, it also includes understand the spirit of it and use a bit of logic and common sense. Something which amateur rules "lawyers" are not proficient in.

| scenario:
you whack the ball towards a flower bed, and quite certain that the ball has entered the flower bed.
when you reach the flower bed, there's a sign stating that entry into the flower bed is prohibited.
could you then proceed to take free relief without finding the ball?
