Shaft and Tip size

Not sure if this has been discussed before but I cannot find it after doing a search.

Does the tip size of the shaft matter?

For example, can a 0.35 shaft fit into a 0.37 head?

Vice versa, can a 0.37 shaft fit into a .35 head?

I have heard before that this can be achieved through shimming and trimming.

Not sure. Any fitters here can verify?

Can for both...but normally don't advice to put .37 into .35.

Because once you reduce the diameter of the shaft, you may cause the shaft to be brittle and may break easily.

Not a fitter but approached a couple on this subject when I was reshafting my irons. Here's sharing what I've learnt.

Yes, possible for both.

A shim is used for smaller diameter shaft into bigger hosel.

As for installing .37 into a smaller hosel, usually the fitter drills the hosel to remove some material. Caution advised.

Thanks. Does that mean that only forged heads can be fitted then. Cast irons cannot?

In any case, the shaft is not touched i.e. not sanded down to fit the head but the head size increased to meet the shaft.

Am I correct?

Haha both odds are the same to me. Never happened.
If it is for irons, you will have to consider this possibility for each and every club head.

By the way, care to share your project?

I have these Steelfiber shafts and I found some heads on ebay from the USA.

However the heads I like are 0.355 but these shafts are 0.37.

So I thgt better to get expert opinion first before I make a commitment to buy the heads.

Having said that, without knowing the probability of heads breaking off, I am still non the wiser as to whether or not to buy.

I seen some badly job done when reducing the diameter.

Most fitters will advise against sanding down the tip in order to fit. But as it is steelfiber shafts, it could be sufficiently strong to be sanded down. I highly doubt anyone can give a definitely answer. 

I have gone through this road and end up deciding not to take the risk. Get the correct shafts and play with a piece of mind.
