| Curiously, is there any differences between a Rescue and Hybrid club???
They are the same to me till yesterday when I overheard a conversation between 2 fiends when I was browsing around in a golf shop.
Summary: Rescue Sharper base profile More use when getting out of rough and want some good distance Showed his friend a Taylormade
Hybrid Flat base profile Best for replacement of long irons and use on fairway for long distance Showed his friend a Ping G25
I am still blur blur, when I goggled, most websites are saying that Rescue & Hybrid are the same. And all started as Hybrid, but TaylorMade named their Hybrids as Rescue, thus the differentiation.
Then now lagi blur................ can someone shed some light on this matter to "de-blur" me???
Have a good weekend ahead....................................

| I think it's the same thing. Many know it as rescue if I'm not wrong, it's due to the very successful market of the TM club, Rescue Mid. | |

| Rescue is a registered trademark of Taylormade afaik
The rest of the world call them utility or hybrid clubs
Same same but different!

| Here's my 2 cents:
By nature of its name, the rescue club was designed (with bottom rails and what not) to assist the golfer to get out of trouble in the rough. The base of the club was designed to help ease through the long grass. You would not need "rescue" if your ball is lying nice on the fairway, right? As for hybrid, it was designed to aid those who had problems hitting their longer irons. Thus the designer married the designs for iron and fairway woods together and came out with a hybrid that allows you to hit like a fairway wood with the higher ball flight characteristics of an iron to land the ball soft and nice. The term utility is a common term covering clubs other than woods or irons. Betul kah? In any case, I try not to allow terminology to rule my game. My take is "does the club work for me"? If it does, it stays in my bag. If it doesn't, out it goes.....who cares about the name/brand/label/etc.

| I always use both terms interchangeably. I have always assumed them to be the same. | |

| Sounds like smart aleck bull to me! I had this q when utility woods start to pick up and was told they are the same! Anything btw an iron and FW is a utility/hybrid/rescue. If u look at GolDigest Hotlists too, they are all classified as Hybrids. And was told basically there are 2 designs, one leaning towards FW with a bigger base & the other shorter base. I saw a phenomenon amongst my kakis though - uncles like to use the term 'rescue' while younger use 'hybrid'. | |

| Rescue is used to save stroke off your game. And hybrids are meant for getting more mileage with the same horsepower. That might be why the older gen calls it rescue and younger gen calls it hybrid. I think back when golf just started. It would just be called golf clubs. | |

| To me the difference between rescue and hybrid is that the hybrid uses both diesel and electricity. | |

| Rescue is to Utility / Hybrid what Panadol is to Paracetamol
One is a brand name, one is the generic name
However, it is true that there are many different types of utility / hybrid clubs in the market and they are designed for different purposes.
Some are designed to be more like woods, but with shorter shafts. The head design will look more "disc" or wood-like, just smaller. These clubs are designed more to help launch the ball.
Some are designed to perform more like long irons, just easier to hit. They will generally have clubs heads that look smaller with deeper faces. The focus here is more toward maintaining ball speed on mishits rather than launching. That being said, they will still be easier to launch than equivalent long irons.
I would suggest that instead of being caught up in the name, understand how the club head design will affect how the club is supposed to function. Then choose the right type of hybrid / utility for your game.

| Gofnut and Derek have pretty much summed it all up, they're all the same class of clubs be it rescue, hybrid or utility.
Cobra was one of the earlier ones in the game with the baffler which had rails on the sole to help guide and glide the club through rough. It was reasonably popular back then but not enough for the industry to sit up and say there's a new class of club we need to look at.
That happened with the advent of TaylorMade's Rescue which exploded onto the scene. Technically speaking back then, utility and hybrid clubs were not a Rescue since that name referred to the TaylorMade club. Tmag single handledly created the hybrid category and Rescue has come to be as synonymous with hybrids as Kleenex is to tissue.
Design wise, there were two approaches as other companies jumped on the hybrid bandwagon. Either start with a wood design and include iron-like properties or vice versa.
The easier to launch and play of the two designs were the wood hybrids with their lower cg, and they worked especially well out of the rough because the increased mass helped to drive the club through the rough and its rounder shape helped to separate the tall grass.
The iron-like designs didn't have as low a cg and produced a more penetrating ball flight. Better players with higher swing speeds preferred this design to help prevent the ball from ballooning. The disadvantage is that it's harder to hit from the rough since launch is relatively lower, and the design's sharper edges would snag in the tall grass thereby slowing the club down and closing the face prematurely.
Instruction then was to sweep the more wood-like hybrids and hit down for the more iron-like utility, which accounts for the confusion these days as some say to sweep and others say to hit down.
The design lines between the the more wood-like ones and iron-like ones have become very much blurred these days it seems, with the wood-like designs dominating the market probably because of the easier launch and all round playability being the winning qualities. And the general instruction on how to hit the modern hybrid has pretty much come around to hitting down on the ball but on a shallower angle than the irons. In other words, a smaller shallower divot.
Hope this helps to shed further light on the subject.
