PostSubject: Putter, Driver, Hybrid and FW selection for beginner   Putter, Driver, Hybrid and FW selection for beginner I_icon_minitimeFri Jun 13, 2014 7:22 pm

Hi,

am a beginner and in the midst of putting up a set of club to go down to the green.

Got myself a set of JPX 800 Pro and a Callaway X-Forged 56/14 sand wedge.

I am thinking of getting a putter and try out for a 9 hole first.

I learnt from a thai coach briefly and was told to get a studio style of putter. But when I search on the internet, the name "studio" seems to be more like a series/brand of putter, rather than a style.

Can anyone enlighten me on this?

As for driver, hybrid and FW, are there any safe recommendation for a beginner?

I was told that a TM RBZ is a safe choice.

Thanks.

hi willytan and haragolfer!

both looks like the 1 I used, a rectangular piece of metal with a cavity at the back.

another point to note was that I was taught to putt with both my arms straight. are these putters mean to be used this way, without bending the elbows?

Studio is Scotty putter, which most probably he meant the plumber's neck.

i think it should be the anser style of putter that i am looking for.

will try to look for 1 in the marketplace.

are there anything that i should look out for a straight back straight through stroke of putting?

meanwhile, any recommedation for Drive, FW and Hybrid?

Thanks!

Don't fuss on equipment. Get older year models n save $$.  With a decent swing it will make a diff of a few yards only.

Putter make sure unr comfortable.

Go check out creativejoe along Chinatown, he has a vast selection of hybrid, woods, driver, irons down to putter for you to choose from and he price is pretty reasonable for beginners who doesn't wanna spend a fortune on clubs.

There are many great offers in our market section. Since I started this game, all my earlier sets or clubs were brought from market space.

Try to buy used from the marketplace to save money. Especially for putter, I changed twice before finally getting comfortable.

Used Taylormade for driver is good and cheap. For hybrid, I like Ping a lot as I find Taylormade's longer shaft hard to control.

I would suggest getting a utility in the 24-27 deg range first and when you can strike that decently get another utlity or FW in the 18-20 deg range.

For Utility, Callaway Legacy going now for 119 brand new at Golf Direct.
http://www.golfrepublic.org/t27828-golf-direct-4th-anniversary-super-sale

Old TM Burner (08 or 09) utility also cheap and good, if lucky can pick it up for 40-50 in the forum.

For Driver, almost anything you buy as a beginner you will want to change within the next 6-12 months, so don't spend too much money.

Since u are taking lessons now, ask your coach for a recommendation.  There should also be some older model drivers at Star Golf, can try during your lesson and together with the coach, see what seems to work better for you.

For cheap older model drivers, TM R7, Burner, R9 all still good enough to play with.  Can find some in the forum for less than $100, some even less than $50.

For recent but (not newest), Callaway X-hot should be good combi of value and performance.

There are many other brands/models of drivers with good performance, but some of them do not drop in value that much (in part linked to how quickly new models within the brand are introduced).

If money is not an issue, then you can consider customised fitting and/or the extremely addictive craftsmanship of JDM.

sorry to say that, but it does not matter much as you will sell the clubs you use now in 1 yrs time anyway, as your swing speed and other things change. Very Happy

so just send some cheap but still decent branded 2nd hand clubs now.
