Hi Guys,
I got question on chipping on the putting green. If I can remember I watched HSBC LPGA at Tanah Merah and the girl are chipping off the putting green on one of the last holes which has an extremely long green. Anyone knows if this is OK? Thanks

It's ok as long as you don't damage it. Phil Mickelson did it before, but why u wanna do it? I thought putting it easier

I remember seeing Sergio Garcia doing that cos there's spike mark in his line of putt.

You will not be on the favourite persons list of the green keeper.

Actually its usually because the green is multiple tier or too long. thanks for the replies

this is especially the case if you are playing at Laguna World Classic course! Anyone seen the greens there?

I think it depends on situation and the level of your chipping skill.
For PM, it's because he could not get a putt on the entire green as the fringe is in the way. I guess that's the reason why he did what he did.

Unless one can clip the ball cleanly ...
For PM's case, the rough was blocking his line of putt ... No way for him to curve that much from left to right into the direction of the hole ...

If we can't get close enough to putt, then we probably don't have precise enough a technique to chip on the green without topping, duffing, or worse, destroying it.
As Haragolfer mentioned, a lower lofted hybrid or even a wood would be the option if one needs a little more oomph than a putter on the green. Way much more forgiving and closer in technique to putting.
Most importantly, the greenskeeper won't be angry.
