Johor's Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar has declared the change of the state's rest days to Friday and Saturday instead of Saturday and Sunday from next year. The much anticipated decision was announced during the investiture ceremony on Saturday in conjunction with his 55th birthday . In his speech at the event held at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim in the royal town, the Sultan said that the change of weekend would take effect from Jan 1, 2014. He said the decision to change the weekend holidays was made after receiving feedback from various quarters and to allow Muslims to preform their religious obligation on Friday in a more peaceful manner. Speculation has been rife about the change after a state government document was leaked on the Internet. Presently, states such as Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu have put Friday and Saturday as their off days.
Prior to 1994, Johor had Friday and Saturday as non-working days

| they change their off day to be Friday and Saturday. But golf courses will insist that Sunday is a week end rate. Big deal, we play less, and see if they survive | |

| Prior to 1984, Friday and Saturday weekends only applied to the public sector including schools but the private sector still kept to Saturday and Sunday as weekends.
Anyway, it's a decision that brings Johor back to the days when "policeman wore shorts"!!!!!! | |

| [ltr]The Johor state government's decision to change its weekend days to Friday and Saturday from the traditional Saturday and Sunday, could lead to higher manpower costs, which could in turn lead to higher prices for consumers, said companies and stakeholders.[/ltr] [ltr] File photo: A general view of Johor Bahru in Malaysia. (AFP/Roslan Rahman) [/ltr] [ltr]SINGAPORE: The Johor state government's decision to change its weekend days to Friday and Saturday from the traditional Saturday and Sunday, could lead to higher manpower costs, which could in turn lead to higher prices for consumers, said companies and stakeholders in Singapore. The Singapore Fruits and Vegetable Importers and Exporters Association said goods from Johor Bahru may end up costing slightly more. That is because workers will still need to work on Fridays to meet demand in Singapore, so workers will have to be given overtime pay. The same concerns are also expressed by logistics companies as drivers will now have to be recalled on their rest days. They said the challenge will be in coordinating work times and logistics, as the new rule kicks in just a month before the Lunar New Year. The Johor State government has announced that come January, weekends will start on Friday instead of Saturday. And the start of the work week will fall on a Sunday. Dave Ng, chairman of Singapore Transport Association, said: "The mindset of all of us is to work five and a half days, but you have to really convince people because from five and a half days, you are actually working one full week. So you have to change the mindset. “We can look into alternatives. To get different colleagues to come in for the first 6 months and see how these things go and we will then see how we can adjust to make sure service is not affected." [/ltr] [ltr]- CNA/nd[/ltr] | |
