PostSubject: Factors to consider when chosing a putter   Factors to consider when chosing a putter I_icon_minitimeTue Nov 24, 2009 1:21 pm

Hi

As stated above, a female friend of mine is looking to buy a putter however, both she and I had totally no idea what should we looking for when choosing a putter.

She is about 1.56m, so i guess the putter length is crucial for her.

Beside that, please advise me so that i can help her on chosing new putter.

Thank you very muchie...

I will say (at least for me) is the weight and also if the roll of the ball suits one's eye.

I would definitely recommend visiting a club fitter FIRST to determine what length suits you best. I'm about 5'11" and I thought that a 35" putter would work well for me. However, given my stance and style of play, I was advised that a 33"/34" putter is better. True enough, it was!

So, get the length of the putter sorted out first. A good club fitter would have several lengths for you to try to see what works best. Some people believe that they can buy a long putter and then have it cut to suit them. This doesn't always work since cutting the shaft of the putter often causes an imbalance on the weight of the putter. It won't function as well or at least, will feel different from when it was first tried and tested.

Once you have the length of the putter determined, consider the other issues like the feel of the club as you stroke it, lie of the putter as you set it down, comfort in the grip, weight of the putter, look of the putter etc.

You'll also need to decide if you prefer a blade putter, mallet putter or a semi-mallet putter. I find it difficult to swap between different putter heads and because of that I'll always go with blade putters. Can't seem to accept a mallet putter even though I've been told that they're easy to play.

hi TS

thanks for the advise.

Yes, i totally agree with you. She had a putter in which the length is way too long for her. Someone recommend to cut short the shaft, but i would actually prefer her to get a proper putter. btw, the putter she is using, looks like a man's putter...way too heavy for her, i find it heavy too.

I was thinking places like GH, they should have different kind of putter with different length..maybe she can give a try there...

Yup, you can visit GH since they have various putter lengths. Ideally, you should have her try the same putter in different lengths rather than different putters in different lengths. This way, she can properly ascertain what length is suitable for her. Alternatively, visit a club fitter who can do that task for you. Experienced club fitters can even advise you on which type of putter suits your putting style.

hi TS

yes, i also think that a clubfiter should able to resolve most of the issue, like length, weight, lie, loft etc etc...

but the thing is, she is very new to this game and she had not had proper putting training and practise...that would actually means that given the inconsistency in putting stroke, i worry clubfitting might not really help her much.

maybe when she is more mature in this game and is able to control her putting well, clubfitting will definitely help her to move on to the next level...what do you think ?

Good point!

That being said, it's still worthwhile trying to get her a putter which suits her. She can use any putter right now but if it doesn't suit her, it may frustrate her (same problem I have with my wife).

So, consider at the very least a putter length which is suitable. Then decide on whether she prefers a blade, mallet or semi-mallet head. Then work on the other factors through feel. Get her to try several putters to see which suits her nicely.

You may want to pop by Pan West since they have Yes! putters for ladies. Yes! putters are very nice to play IMHO and the ladies variant is designed for them with a pink grip etc. I think Odys also have a similar ladies variant which can be both attractive as well as better-suited.

hi TS

thanks for the advise....i have just visit the YES putter website and i was speechless at the number of putters that YES carry....

The pink tracy looks nice..and i guess most females likes pink pink stuff...haha !!

will pop by PW and let her give a shot on different putter, primarily focus on putter length and type of head..to the level where she felt comfortable with.

From there, i will have to work on her to skill up her putting skill, to gain better control on her putter.

thanks again

Yeah, just go to Pan West and tell them that Tiger sent you. They'll stare at you blankly then laugh at you. After which time, hit them on the head with the putter and run off Razz

if she is just starting out, i doubt you can find an ideal putter for her just yet....... cos

1) she has not found her putting stroke yet
2) not sure about the weight of the putter
3) length of the putter

if u are not sponsoring her, suggest getting a decent used putter, be it blade/mallet, but i think a short putter would be more ideal (33/34in) considering her height....

my wife abt her height, she is using a 32in putter

if u are sponsoring her, go BFG n get ZEN lor..... or one of those SCOTTY in the cabinet

I'd suggest ask her get something that you like. In case she don't like that it goes straight into your bag! That's what I did! Hahahahahahahaha!

hi slinger

yes, i agree, therefore the aim is not to find a ideal putter for her, but something i would say playable and comfortable for her, at least a suitable length wise....

i wish i can afford to sponsor her but i'm too poor for that...haha..
however, between Scotty and Zen..i will definitely go for ZEN....great putter, nice roll and soft feel.

I will take note ..32 and 33inch putter..that should be the length she gonna give it a try..

thanks bro

You should also assure her that putting is tricky so she should not consider the putter as her last putter. In fact, as the game progresses, she'll find her "groove" and may want to upgrade her putter Smile
