Hello. Advice for buying wood?

Hi I'm new to golfing. Would like some advice on getting some woods. Think I might get a 3 and 5? Not sure if I need a hybrid. Or a driver yet. Wondering what should I look out for in a beginner wood? I mean, how is it different from the ones that pros use...? Also do advice on some models I can possibly get. Looking for 2nd hand if possible.

I am a newbie too. So can't give much recommendation for you. If you have frens into golf,you should try out their clubs to see which u prefer - woods or hybrids. or even which model u hit well with.  2nd hand is good option to try.

Start with a 4/5 wood if u are still finding your swing as the shaft is shorter, it is easier to swing. Once u get a hang of it, then u decide whether u need a 3 wood to close up ur distance between the driver.

Try to find something that's easier to lauch, with a lighter shaft and lighter head. Do some research on maruman woods. They're not bad for beginners.

Start with a forgiving 4 Or 5 wood... models like rbz & xhot... u can go the golf bargain Or golf direct to see... their price might be only slightly higher than second hand ones … sometime golf bargain have demo clubs for sale which is pretty Good deal as well... hope it helps  

I would ask the teaching Pro or the one that give u the beginner set or the club fitters.
There are so many combinations on the wood.
Close face, square or open face for a start.
Then there are deep face and shallow head.
If U cannot compress the ball, then those with speed slot would not be suitable.

OK weight is another issue, if the club dont match your set, U have to remember how to swing it.

Driving range hitting is always good.  no stress, hit another one and another one.

Maruman, s-yard......the expensive ones, we dont see them in the PGA circuit.

Look at the head, feel the weight, if U are not comfortable with the address, swing,, chances are U will not be able to play with it.

As I always tell those beginners, LINE UP all your friends clubs to try.
If possible borrow to have a few rounds.  If like , bring the club to the shop to ask for the same spec .
what is good might not be cheap, like wise what is cheap might not be good OSO.
I SUGGEST, U go rob all your friends spare clubs to try.

they cannot get good resale price and would be more than happy to "give " U the dust collector or part with a token sum.  Buy him a beer.

In general, the longer a club and the lower the loft, the harder it is to use effectively.

As a beginner, I am not sure how much mileage you can from a 3 wood.  It takes quite a long time to learn how to use woods properly.

I would suggest you start with a high lofted hybrid (25 deg or at most 22 deg) and learn to strike that first.

If you can hit that reasonably well, then you can move on the a 18-19 deg hybrid (normally classified as a 3 hybrd) OR a 18-19 deg wood (normally a 5 wood).  They should go approximately the same distance in the hands of a beginner moving on to becoming a "seasoned" beginner.

Get a 5 wood to start with before the 3 wood

Ok so maybe i'll get like a hybrid first and a 5 wood? What should I look out for? E.g. what kinda loft? like how do i know whats forgiving etc? Esp if im looking at marketplace..?

Or should i buy like a 7 wood to like practice? lol. i mean its loft similar to hybrid 4 right? (dont really know whats the diff though, evne if their loft are similar, i read something bout playing on the rough...)

These are personal preference.  

But if you need a guide, for hybrids, I find the TM 2.0 Rescues & Cobra (not sure of the model but the one with 3 yellow alignment lines on the crown) very easy to use. Price is also very good at GD. 

For FW, it's a little more difficult as it can be a hit & miss for many. I find Ping FW easy to use, so that could be a start. Price is a sticker tho, but the G15 4FW is one hell of a FW. Can hunt around in GR for formers who have one looking for a new owner.  I prefer lower profile, smaller sized FW, abt 170cc.  The bigger headed ones look like duff disasters at address. 

I took a while to settle on the FW that I'm using now.  Still thinking of options but for now, I'll stick with what I have for a while. I carry a 4FW, 3H, 5H, followed by 6-P.  I find that this is enough for my distance gaps. 

Another thing: My 4FW is at 42.5", relatively easier to hit compared to the longer shafts that come with the FW nowadays. Also, as an Asian (shorter height compared to Caucasian), I find the longer lengths a tough demand on swing mechanics.  

A good contact is easy to achieve from a shorter-length shaft. The longer shafts are more difficult to handle and manage.  So comparatively, the end results are definitely better with my shorter 4FW.  

One final thought. My sense is no need to buy FW first. Get the hybrid, possibly a 3h & start from there. It is a versatile club that can be used from tee to green.  The FW can come later after you have gained enough confidence & experience with the hybrid.

Think there are just too many permutations out there and a lot dependent on your irons length and capabilities..

If you are already hitting your 5i consistently then I guess you could go for a 21* hybrid. Not sure how big how tall how strong and whats your swing speed like, thus I can't comment on the shaft or what you should look for..

And I agree to getting a hybrid first then 5w. Thereafter the driver...

Lastly, please spend some money on a coach.. Not only can he correct your swing, he could also be the one guiding your equipment, like what to buy and when to buy.. I wasted many hours and youth doing the wrong thing for many years till I became too old to change my bad habits.. Thus, please start right, right from the start..

Very forgiving.....and easy to launch even with the stock shaft.

Now building another one....a Razr hawk 5 wood

Heard from a regular forumer that its a brainless to hit club..later regretted selling it. Haha..waiting for further price reduction at GD
