| Can anyone advise how is golf bag included in personal baggage allowance for SIA flights? This is extracted from SIA website: Golfing equipment A standard charge of 6kg will be applied on the golfing equipment if its weight and your other checked baggage exceed the free allowance entitled to you. This is applicable up to a maximum excess of 15kg for the golf equipment. Normal excess baggage charges will apply for any excess weight beyond 15kg. A passenger baggage allowance on standard Economy flights should be 20kg. Example: [th]Normal Baggage [/th][th] Normal Baggage Charge[/th][th] Golf Equipment[/th][th] Golf Equipment Charge[/th][th] Total Excess Charge[/th] 30 kg | 10 kg | 10 kg | 6 kg | 16 kg | 30 kg | 10 kg | 20 kg | 6 kg + 5 kg | 21 kg | 30 kg | 10 kg | 3 kg | 3 kg | 13 kg |
For excess baggage charges between zones, please click here. This special charge is only applicable to one set of golf equipment per customer. One set of golf equipment is deemed to comprise:
- 1 golf bag containing not more than 14 golf clubs
- Maximum of 12 golf balls
- 1 pair of golf shoes
- Golf tees
- Any additional golf sets shall be charged according to the standard excess baggage charges.
For travel to/from the United States, each golf set will be considered as one piece of luggage under the piece system, and any excess baggage will be charged. From the SIA website, this is how I interpreted: golf bag will not be counted as additional piece of baggage if golf bag + check in baggage do not exceed personal baggage allowance which should be 20kg for standard SQ Economy flights. If golf bag + check in baggage exceeded personal baggage allowance, it will be charged up to 6 kg excess baggage charge up to maximum of 15 kg for golf bag.

| Customs may check, especially if you buy new clubs/shafts. For GST purposes. Australia customs will check for mud, so make sure your clubs and shoes are clean. | |

| so far in my experience when travelling, they don't get too hung up on your golf bag UNLESS it is a budget airline, then they will definitely charge as that is their biz model, every extra luggage is $$$$$
For major airlines, their air tickets already marked up quite a bit so they don't nitpick, at least that is my experience so far. never been asked to pay money for golf bag. I've played golf as far out as Australia, Mauritius, travelling with my golf bag. so, this is based on my experience
Alfred, if you are flying SQ and taking your golf bag, I think just go to the check in counter, smile, and be nice to the counter lady. If your charm don't work, then just suck it up and pay for whatever extra charge loh. If you already made plans to fly overseas for golf, you already made the commitment (i.e, air ticket booked, hotel booked, golf game booked, etc), if at the airport they wanna charge extra for golf bag, then its just part of the overall commitment

SQ and TG to Bangkok so far they never mention anything.

| My recent trip to Johannesburg on SQ, I checked in personal luggage which was abot 19kg plus a golf travel bag weighting 15-16kg. No questions asked but I am on Krisflyer Gold which entitle me additional allowance on overall weight. But liked what the bros mentioned here, very seldom SQ will question unless yours is way exceed the maximum weight allow. Only time I kana was on those connecting American flight as most consider golf bag as excess baggage and need to pay. Anyway, I am flying off to Joberg later this evening again. | |

In any case, I have also never been asked to pay for extra baggage, especially when traveling with wife/family cos the weight get shared among the travelers.. Any exciting destination you looking to go which you would like to share with us??

From the SIA website, this is how I interpreted: golf bag will not be counted as additional piece of baggage if golf bag + check in baggage do not exceed personal baggage allowance which should be 20kg for standard SQ Economy flights.
If golf bag + check in baggage exceeded personal baggage allowance, it will be charged up to 6 kg excess baggage charge up to maximum of 15 kg for golf bag. SQ and most Star Alliance carriers treat golf bag as sports equipment which entitles you up to 15kg. In other words, you are allowed to have a checked in bag up to 20kg plus a golf bag. But the golf bag must not weight more than 15kg. Otherwise, the additional charges kicks in.

| Recently gone to BKK and Hua Hin for golf, my golf bag was weigh in at 18Kg i think, with my bag at 9-10kg, i was let through, luckly. But again i was there really early at the airport before 2 hours flight time. So it depends. | |

| Golf bag up to 15kg will be treated as 6kg. So if you are entitled to 20kg for economy, you can carry another bag up to 14kg to be absolutely safe. But they normally won't kill you for another 1-2kg. | |

| I think SQ is usually fine...
Better to go to the respective airline website to verify, some restrict the number of luggage that can be checked-in, the rest will have charges.
Recently I went to Bali on Klm, and they insisted on me paying for the additional package staing they had indicated in their website....

| SQ lates website update states that from the 15th Nov, all sports equipment will be counted towards your total weight allowances. This includes your golf bags. Any excess will be charged accordingly. | |

This because they have increase baggage allowance across all classes by 10kg. Now you are entitled to 30kg check-in baggage in economy class.

| The best airline to take in my opinion for golfing in the Asean region is Silkair. It is usually the best value for $$. Just do not travel during the peak season to certain places like ChiangMai.
Budget airlines may not be cheap after u add the golf bag charges which they usually charge by per sector. Always compare prices between all the airlines before buying. U will be surprised that some budget airlines may be more expensive. Look out for promotions.

| Kakis, For regular airlines, checking in a set of golf clubs is not an issue. For LCC, you only need to buy up to 15KG of check-in for your golf bag - a set is about that, airlines asks you to buy 20kg or more, that would be a waste of money. | |
