Yup, unfortunately it took 2 disasters (both aerial & naval) to put things on track..... On September 26, 1997, a Garuda Indonesia Airbus A300B4 (registered PK-GAI) Flight 152 flying from Jakarta to Medan, crashed into woodlands 29 km from Medan in low visibility. All 234 passengers and crew were killed in the disaster. The crash site was at an altitude of 3,000 feet (915 m) above sea level, near the village of Pancur Batu.

Investigation

The cause of the crash, according to the official report of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), were:[citation needed]
The aircraft turned left instead of right as instructed by the ATC at 06:30:04.
The aircraft descended below the assigned altitude of 2,000 ft and thereafter struck treetops at 1550 ft above mean sea level.

Air traffic controller: Turning right sir.
Pilot: Roger 152.
Air traffic controller: 152 Confirm you're making turning left now?
Pilot: We are turning right now.

Air traffic controller: GIA 152 continue turn right heading 015.
Pilot: "Allahu akbar! (God is great!)"

Hours after the deadly plane crash, Mount 1, a supertanker had rammed Vikraman, a cargo ship at about 2300H off Port Dickson. Out of 34 on-board the Vikraman, only 5 survived. They were picked up by a Thai merchant vessel as well as the RMN’s KD Lekir corvette. Low visibility due to haze has been held responsible for such deadly incident.

 

This haze thing is turning into a farce ~ as much as our gahmen want to do something about this but they can't because they need to be diplomatically correct, while the Indon gahmen can't or does not want to do anything about it because what they have on their hands is politically motivated.......  

Did anyone watch the open discussion aired last Wednesday, 19/6/2013 on CNA involving VB and his health advisory panel.  Did anyone notice VB's constipated look on camera when the program was flooded with calls from the public and even viewers across the Causeway asking him how is he going to resolve the situation when he goes over to Jakarta to speak with the Indon gahmen...... Unfortunately, VB had chosen to serve the nation and his team better have some world class response at the end of this exercise because at the end of the month there'll be that world class pay package credited to their bank accounts ~ sad but true........

Haven't done a bloomberg on this, we're looking at oversupply killing palm oil prices now. Wonder what it was like in 1997.

check palm oil boom yrs.. late 80s to 90s.. economical life span 20-25 yrs.. after that must destroy to replant mah.. abt time liao???

finally, Indo apologised.

I think it's appropriate for Indonesia to apologize. It's should not be perceived as a sign of weakness but rather than cross-border relationships are more important than pride.

I find it laughable.

for the record...the real heros and the ones who put out the haze and fire in 1997 were the bomba squad from Malaysia...and now they are at the receiving end again....

Guys, we'll never be satisfied. Don't apologize - complain. Apologize - complain.

What I'm only saying is save the apology,  and some responsible action please.

Say sorry, do something about it and move on.

Just wondering if any of you are feeling unwell as a result of being exposed to the haze last week.

For me it hit KL about Saturday, got worse on Sunday and was horrible yesterday.  Today it is hovering about 200.

4 days in, and my asthma is kicking in ... my respiratory system is asking for assistance and I'll be dropping by the doctor after this.

I am really hoping a heavy rain will come soon ...

I flew in to KL yesterday. Could smell the haze from the plane air con vent once it was about to reach KLIA. Experience abit of chest pain yesterday but still manageable.

Same here, waking up with congested airway and blocked nose since it started 2 weeks back. Also experience itching on face and arms when PSI hits beyond 300.......

The haze seems to be heading this way again as we speak........

Cough...cannot...*cough*...recover. Dem haze.
