| With 180m left, 2 questions you have to ask yourself Can reach? Hight Percentage shot?Pls see below for definition
If both also yes then you might want to go for it.
If one of the above is a no, lay up to a full wedge distance approach shot, typically golfers have 3-4 wedges in the bag So you have more room for error(esp for 90-100 shooters) Eg P -95m 52 - 85m 56- 75m 60 - 65m
From 180 m you just have to take an iron that would get you within full wedge distance ( In this case P- 8i)
Why not get closer?Longer irons means more mistakes(hazard,ob etc). Find short grass is important to reduce strokes and help consistency
(Percentage shot definition rule of thumb) If I hit 10 shots from here, how many times could I hit the shot that I am visualizing?
High Percentage 7 of 10 times Medium Percentage 4 to 6 times Low Percentage 3 to 0 times
Hope it helps | |

| If a 180m shot throws you off, think front of the green which could come down to 160m depending on the size of the green. That should be a more manageable shot. A good chip from there could secure your par. | |

| someone wise once told me. For our (beginner) standard, don't play to par. Play to bogey. Par 4 is actually 5 shots. 3 on 2 putts.
If every hole you bogey, you will break 100 already.
180m? Lay up and get a 3 on.

| I agree... but I'm sure many casual hackers (myself included) believe that when we look at the flag from 180m out, we're actually Tiger, Rory, Luke and Bubba all rolled into one. We're not thinking of playing safe but wondering if we should land the ball on the fringe and let it roll into the hole or have it hop to the side of the ridge and trickle into the hole. Of course, execution and thought process are two very different things. | |

| Work on your short game 50m and in.
So that when you have distances like this, you can go for it, just aim for center of green/away from hazard. If you miss the green pin high, make sure you miss it on a safe/better side, so that the next shot will be easier. If you miss green short, your short game will give you confidence to put it close the next short.
So moral of story, have a deadly short game.

+1 Agree, thought process vs execution realism vs potential ability...... I read with pleasure on contributions made to this thread till date, but honestly how many out there has actually performed what they had professed or hope to achieve their strategies on the course from that yardage (10 out of 10 occasions)....... Many times when I stand at the 180m marker, I can see the flag and visualize how I will play the next shot but often than not the opposite happens ~ probably that's what makes this game intriguing and challenging........

With your strength, it's likely that your first PW shot will overrun the green and you'll need to go down to 10% strength to get the ball back on again.

| If there is no water hazard in front, can try 5i or hybrid. | |

| Most likely I will go with my hybrid. But it also depends on the wind condition, the lies, pin position and also the hazard around the pin. For me, it also depends on my form, if I am hitting fine that day, I will go with my 5i or 4i.. | |

| For me. I try not to think too much. Just take and whack. Usually it works like the 3 wood I hit last weekend to 3 feet for birdie at army 9. hhehehheh If tink too much, even 70m shots will go kuku, like the navy 9 I dumped into water Is ALL IN THE MIND | |

| I still can't quite get the swing rite for anything longer than my 6i (160m) so I will still try with my 3H (170+m w/ carry) followed by a longer putt. If not will be a 9i (110m) followed by choked down SW (70m). | |

| For me, depends on mood of the day.
My coach once told me to do just what you feel like doing.
At the end of the day, golf is something meant to be enjoyed.
Feel like getting a better score, be safe and layup.
Just feel like whacking and chionging and that will make you feel better on that day, then just go for it!

| my go to shot is always to duff a hybrid to 120m . then exert all my effort thin slam top a sand wedge 3m and finally full top a pitching wedge quarter shot exactly 57m to a spot precisely 2 flag sticks right of the pin. green or no green. from there it is an easy chip pull to 20m pass the hole and 2 putt to lip out of the hole. phew...... wipes sweat off brow then wave to the audience gathering behind me on the tee box. | |
