Time and again.. We talk about who's driving longer and which driver gives us the most boom.. Distance is so insignificant after reading this...

The latest soft spoken lady Champ InBee Park, find her driving distance if you can....

Who heard of the longest driver Daniela Iacobelli ??

Enjoy !

I always tell my golf kakis......i not scare you are hitting long....i only scare when you are hitting accurate.....if your irons and short game is sharp and steady...you have no worry over the long hitter.

I wouldn't say that distance is insignificant.

Distance has its advantages and all else being equal, the longer hitter is at an advantage.

For example a 400m par 4. A person who drives 220m will have a 180m second shot, which is probably a 5w or a 3h. A person who drive 260m on the other hand is left with a 140m second shot, which probably require a 9i or 8i.

Look at most of the golfing legends like Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. They may not be the longest hitters but they are still among the longer hitters on tour during their time and they can take advantage of the par five.

Therefore IMHO to say distance is insignificant is not true. Being a below average player myself with a 200m drive, I definitely wish I can get another 50m of the tee.

I have always been amazed by inbee park short game and especially her consistency in putting... Thou not too long off the tees but her short game and putting always kept her in contention for titles..

Tat being said.. Guess having distance off e tee makes the target nearer... But end of the day, it's the short game and putting tat gets e job done...

Damn i luv tis game!!!

The koreans are damn good with their wedges, irons and bybrids. At east, that was what i witnessed at the HSBC event.

Their chipping is amzing! generally, its mostly a gimme .

Luke Donald is not a long hitter

But he was world number one because of his iron play, short game and putting

But he is not yet a Major Champion till now ... In order to have an edge in a Major Championship like Master, one needs to tee off long and straight so that he has a better chance to position the ball on the very difficult green in his second or third shot ... Smile

I think for ladies its possible coz the gap is not huge ie most top players stil hover above the median I think

for my personal local golf circuit.....the long hitters will thrash me ....even if they play to 80% of their actual capable length.

I have this cousin whom I have been playing with since I first started golf...

Of cos he's played the game longer than I do.. He's 10/14 times shorter than me by say 10m off the tee.. But I have never been able to beat him consistently.. sure, some games I would beat him on his off days, but most of the time, he's got the upper hand..

When you are 10-20m behind somebody.. But, you have a powerful short game... Doesn't that even things out ?

Wonder what the pros think and their personal experiences...

Usually you see the pros play, most can have GIR, but it's the putting that separates them.

I think it is also very important in keeping the ball in the fairway. Most probably, that explains Michelle Wie distance, guess she uses more 3/5 woods to tee off than the driver.

Personally, I can score much better if I keep the ball in the fairway, usually that means taking less than driver to be accurate. How many times a round have we slice or duck hook a ball into trouble and end up getting a big score!

I personally know a friends who does not drive more than 220 yards but his iron game is so solid that he ends up playing scratch most of the time..

and the course we play is 7200 yards so by no standard short!!

I think ex-no-1 Luke Donald is also considered shorthitter by tour standard and he still manage to to be no 1. That goes to show, it accuracy and consistency that matters.

Hitting far doesn't guarantee one to be a champion; and to be a champion doesn't have to hit far, relatively speaking. Smile
