PostSubject: Golf mould character??   Golf mould character?? I_icon_minitimeWed Oct 10, 2012 10:00 pm

This morning i had a converstation with my boss, he said it's good that we started learning golf and enjoying the game from a young age. So it will shape our character to be better and more patient as we become more matured.

For example we know this is a gentleman game, one decide whether to lie about his score or tell the truth, keeping quiet and respecting flightmates when they are taking a shot / putt.

I guess it does make much sense . What do you guys think ?

today at kanji

we are at hole 2 tee box. players from 7th fairway landed the ball 3m from my buggy.

i was seated in the buggy

not even an apology. talk to us fiercely some more

i lodge a dangerous play complaint officially.

Talking about culturing character.. some people are just boorish

And these golfers are matured adults in their 50s

I believe golf provide a platform for one to mold their character in a positive way such as patience and learn to deal with difficult situation with positive mindset.

However, this is only a platform, if ones doesn't utilise this platform to learn, then he will never be able to have these attribute.

Thus end of the day it is still his or her decision to make the best out of the game.

I also think there's too much gangster behaviour on the golf courses.

Couple of months back, we were in Changi, Army hole 4, friend spray a shot into OB and the ball happened to land on the green of the hole 2, when he walked over wanted to apologized before he opened his mouth, the guy was swearing all the mother #$*#%*! words....

Finished game, logged a complained to marshall about such behaviour.

I think golf is a great game for kids to learn life skills.

If you think about it this is the only game that players call penalties on themselves. That teaches the kids honesty and integrity. The mental aspect of the game can teach kids to control their emotions as well.

I feel if the kid learns golf from a young age then it can definitely help shape their character. However for the middle age man I doubt it will have much of an effect. Can't expect a boorish man to be a gentleman just after picking up golf or a cheat to become honest after playing golf.

True , it also does show a hidden personality of a person to his flight mate , especially when temper start flaring or becoming self centered which he don't do normally...

I'm sure those that you saw cheating during charity games were not little kids right. Most likely middle age man who pick up golf during adulthood.

I mean if kids (around 5years old) learn golf then the game can teach them honesty and integrity.

Btw not only did people cheat in game, also rigged the lucky draw I also seen before.

No matter how bad experiences we may encounter, just keep reminding ourselves to be patient. No point spending money and 4/5 hours getting disturbed by those who don't even deserve to exist in our life.

From my experience, it seems like golf reveals character so much more than moulding. Razz

I have yet to see anyone, young or old, male or female, rich or poor, whose character turned better after playing golf.... Smile

Honestly, such behavior or occurrence happens far too often...... is it the club culture or singapore culture ? be your own judge. Or can we blamed it to the ease, golfers are getting their handicap without proper or attending etiquette course. Such Boorish behavior do occur not only with 50s as described but, the younger generation too,,, or the "new rich" or "new poor" well educated or not. Come over to SICC ... we have such characters too, they have their own rules ! ... but we do haul them in for long suspension, but such occurrence is still happening everywhere and much too often !.

Ask the question "what constitute within hitting distance and dangerous play" I can bet my last dollar at least half the golfing population here will get it wrong!

Are we having it too easy ?..are we too commercialise? ... are pros to be blame too(too paiseh after 12 lessons)? is USGA at fault for changing and making it easier for new golfers to get a handicap(submitting 10 cards and for etiquette some only watch a video) ?.

Its a dangerous game, if not treated with respect or understanding. For those who are reading and somehow feel guilty of breaking some kind of etiquette rules..... do us all a favour... read up and understand the rules and etiquette of golf.

Well maybe and only maybe .... having "Peer Pressure" on to your golfing mates who err might help him to understand... possible ?

I have a friend who have lost his right eye due to a careless golfer ! he was then only 30 years of age.

Golf Republic ..... please organise something for all our fellow golfers here to gain more knowledge about golfing etiquettes ( I acknowledge we do have a dedicated page on rules and etiquette here) maybe it is a good opportunity to go one step further in the game we love and enjoy so much ...... GOLF !

Agreed, in this current competitive environment, winning seems to be everything. Worst thing is that, this mentality have been brought into social games which initial intention is to relax and enjoy the game.

One side note of kids learning golf in a young age of 5, I hope what I going to say will not offense anyone, but honestly, kids now a days learn to lie at a age younger than 5, I've seen them denying that they ate the last cookies or just pretend to be sick to avoid the vegetables on the plate, these are small gesture but all things start small, golf can't teach them to be a person of honesty and integrity, but only a parent with honesty and integrity can instill these attribute to them.

me neither bro. golf will not change someone's character. you can change bad habits, but you can not change character. character is built by habits as you grow up.

people say that golf was a gentleman game, but not anymore. its more of a "status" game imo

Golf, or most any sport for that matter, can help build character from a young age. It teaches essential lessons about life...Honesty, integrity, etiquette, honor, hard work, etc.

Those are harder to teach once people start getting older. It is possible, but much more difficult. Kind of the idea that a leopard cannot change his spots type thing.

As people get older, like mentioned before, golf is a game that can reveal character traits and is a good way to get a read on someone and how they are. I would not think it would be a place for an older person to "change or mould" their current character traits.

I was shocked n really pissed when I asked : "Isnt it safety 1st when ur ball heading to our buggy?" n the reply was : "NO!, very FIRM on NO" in a gangster style tone... I will pray that this asshole will not hit by a ball but curse that he hit by a truck....
