When I was young I played a bit of guitar; growing up then, I felt that I had to learn to play real fast; shred like crazy. Malmsteen, Satriani, Steve Vai..etc were big influences. Then as I got older, I started appreciating more the "playing with feeling"; type of stuff like ironfist mentioned.
Fretboard gymnastics like malmsteen are quite impressive; but to be able to play a seemingly simple solo like Jeff Beck's Cause we ended as lovers with feel is also very difficult. I find harder because you can't really "hide" behind the fast notes... if you can't make the guitar sing with feeling with the fewer and slower notes.. it can sound pretty bland and bad.. .. haven't touched the guitar for like 2 decades now.. hahahaa

wah... Master SS, you're multitalented ! I haven't touch my guitar for ages also... furthermore, my left hand's little finger sufferred trigger finger last year. Even I've recovered from it, there's some kind of stiffness there which probably will cause problem in playing guitar....

wahh i've kinda reached a wall with my playing. can't seem to improve anymore! haha maybe i'm just not trying hard enough but now it's golf that's taking precedence. btw SS i love jeff beck's version of that song..
playing the guitar well takes talent and time. i have neither! lol

oh and i personally think that steve vai has one of the best techniques out there and he combines feel speed and precision so well. (fave is still john mayer though)

Steve Vai very good Because of him, I wanted a Ibanez Jem with a monkey grip.. hahahaha but of course couldn't even play anything close to him.. Had a fren who played some cheap Strat knock-off.. and played it damn good...
Same like golf lah.. hahahah I buy equipment, but cannot buy a swing..

Amongst my favourites like Vai, Satriani, i also like Stevie Ray Vaughn who's since died in a plane crash.
Enjoy.....

Gary Moore, Angus & Malcome Young (ACDC) Gary Richrath (REO Speedwagon), and Randy Rhodes were my guitar heros many years ago. Owned about five guitars at one time.
One was brand new Les Pau Deluxe (sunburst) just like Gary Richrath's direct from the Kalmazoo factory.
Quit my job and had to sell it (and a 1969 SS 327 hp Chevy Camero) to pay bills.
Me have been playing solid-body electric guitars on-and-off for 20+ years. I was once in a rhythm-n-blues band as the only non-American Black where I played lead guitar. PLayed also in a garage band with song lists that inlcuded Black Sabbath, Dio, Ozzy, 38 Special, Areosmith, Boston, etc.
Play by ear but can read basic notes.
Tabs off the internet are cool. Much better than repeatedly moving an album needle back across tracks trying to hear notes like learning Lynyrd Skynyrd's triple solos of the song 'Freebird'.
Needless to say, I play guitar much better than I play golf!
