Why must a golfer have a good grip?

As a coach it took me years to really understand the importance of the grip and to be able to actually understand the difference between a good grip and a bad grip, how it actually impacts a golf shot.

If you are a golfer who doesn't quite understand it, here is a little video that should give you a better idea of the relationship between your grip and your club face during the swing.

Too often I see golfers working on things that are not related to the ball flight issues they are having, or in this case an issue of a golf club not moving the way it is supposed to.

Before Mike (the guy in the video) started his first lesson, he gave me a laundry list of things he thought he was doing wrong or that other people told him he was doing wrong. It was all of the same old cliche's that I hear again and again, he was lifting his head, and he was coming over the top, and he wasn't keeping his left arm straight, and a few other things.

Long story short Mike had been listening to the advice of others and had a head full of ideas, none of which were relevant to his real issue, his grip.

It's very common for golfers to give each other tips or to coach each other's swings and miss the crucial things completely, simply because they don't understand things like the grip / club face relationship that I talk about in the video.

My advice to golfers who look to others for swing advice is to be very careful because error detection and correction is not an easy thing and, what works for someone else is not necessarily going to work for you.
If someone gives you a tip, they should also be able to give you the details of the what and the why and the how it is going to impact the swing and the ball flight.

I always keep this thought with me "Just think about grip as the root to your golf game" and if I can't get the root right, I can't really proceed any further without a good base

Great video Brad..... the swing path looks so much better too.

the only time i have not seen this work was for a golfer who had massive hook problem when he strengthen his right grip. but we discover quickly that his right arm (shoulder to finger tip) was at least an inch longer than his left.
