Subject: Why am I hitting near the heel of the club face? Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:04 pm
I have tried standing away from the ball. I have tried standing tall. I have tried hitting from in to out I have tried almost everything. But I'm still hitting the the heel.
In fact I have checked with a couple of pro, they say it's not a problem Any advice.

I have a particular PW that always does that. Went to compare w the rest of mine n found it to be 1+* flatter than the rest.
Can DIY to check. Just buy electrical tape n tape the bottom next time u go to the range. U will then see for urself. Dun need any lieboard...might end up buying something u dun need

I suspect it is not. This was a new wedge, the marks on the sole seem OK. This problem has been with me for quite a while. Including the longer irons.

Actually you have quite consistent contact, and near perfect contact too!
The sweet spot of your club is almost right smack in the middle of the group of ball marks! Don't change a thing my friend

Sometimes it got worst and became a shank.

Hmmm... On days that you shank consistently, if you tend to hit your driver or fairway wood well, then it could be a too flat swing plane.
Just taking a blind guess without seeing your swing!
Very nice pic by the way... Wat club is that?

When I try swing more upright, it got worst. It's a Cleveland, I just bought it at Isetan sales. S$139 for 2

Maybe u coming too much from the inside. On shots that you get stuck you will block or shank them
Just a guess. See a pro or get videoed and check your angles

Or you could be shifting too much of your body weight between your toes and your heel during the swing?
Post a vid, or see a coach?

Have you tried with your normal set uo or stance but the ball is align nearer to the toe?
By that I mean your feet will also move back by about 1 inch or so.
Cheers man

Will test this out. Saw 2 pro, they say it's OK. But for me...it's not OK.

This could be a possible reason. I stay quite and stabilize my knee it does help. But not always.

I used to have this same issue.
On GolfWRX, there is something the guys there called 'humping the goat' or early extension. This was where the spine angle is lost as the hips move closer to the ball at impact. It caused me to hit near the heel. Lots of write-up on this if you google the terms.
Now, I sometimes hit off the toe when I over-correct.
May or may not be your issue; can't tell without a video of the swing.

Google Humping the goat? I will get Muar Chee signature.
I think you are right, when I pay attention to my spine, hip and knee it does help. But on and off.

Hi Lee, I t think you have pointed me to the right direction. I wasn't aware I'm humping the goat.
Here are are the good answers http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/404520-drills-to-stop-humping-the-goat/

Thanks Lee36328 and seebayho. Learnt a new term today!
I wonder if this term would still be appropriate if a lady golfer is struggling with this problem......

My take on why your hitting the heel Of the club face
1. Your set up is wrong 2. Your trying to force your swing 3. Maybe using a wedge is not meant for you try something more forgiving
Hope it helps

Check your initial takeaway sounds like you are taking inside the line too early, then you get stuck on downswing.

Most welcome guys.
It's quite common among beginners, and I had a massive, massive case of it when I first started. Quite common among guys, but to answer r510to's question, somehow among the ladies I've been fortunate to assist with, it's not so prevalent, good form is usually easy for them. From what I've come across, seems for ladies, the challenge is more power than form, and for guys, it's the reverse. Hmm... maybe something instinctive in the guys which gave us the natural tendency for this move...?
Because the move is such an easy way to generate power albeit in an incorrect way, it gets embedded quite deeply in our swing. So, in order to erase it, we've got to find a replacement that is equally if not more powerful. Else, under pressure, we will subconsciously revert to this move.
Cheers.

Here's a good explanation of HTG, or more correctly, early extension, what causes it, and how to rectify it.
And another good thread discussing this in detail, with different points of view from knowledgeable people on why it happens.

That's actually a good choice ! Actually what I mean is I get a wedge with more bounce , not those super grinded/ players I wanna flop the ball like tiger kind
