Yes, I suck. I don't think saying that we played off Blue helps but we did.

Some inescapable truths about Ponderosa:

1. I'll never play well there.
2. It was designed by Mloy.
3. It favors golfers who can hit the ball (and I can't hit the ball there; see #1)
4. Buggy on track is a crappy way to golf.... but that's just an excuse.
5. I'll never play well there.

No more Ponderosa for me.

ZX 25d me nicely.

First six (where he partnered me), he only scored a miserable par and I think I had to save a hole or two (if you can believe that).

Next 2 sixes (where he partnered anyone other than me), he was on fire bring home a string of pars which included 3 birds (2 of which were back-to-back).

But the great thing about playing with ZX (as opposed to Mloy) is that ZX is a very supportive and encouraging golfer. He doesn't MF but encourages. He helps. Mloy just kicks you in the nuts, spits on you and then sets your body ablaze with her gaze of death.

Hi People, just to translate what the scores above mean in terms of handicap differentials

Ponderosa Blue: Course Rating: 71.4 Slope Rating: 127

Ponderosa Red: Course Rating: 71.0 Slope Rating 127

Course rating refers to the score that a scratch golfer (i.e. Handicap 0) is expected to shoot from that tee box. Slope rating is a gauge how incrementally difficult it is for the higher handicap golfer to play the course. The standard slope rating is 113, i.e. A course that is equally easy for the high handicap as it is for the scratch golfer to play to his or her handicap.

So the formula for calculation as follows:

Gross Score - Course Rating = Gross Differential

Gross Differential x Standard Slope / Slope Rating = Calculated Differential

e.g. Using mloy's 90

90 - 71 = 19 (Gross Differential)

19 x 113 (Standard Slope) / 127 (Ponderosa Red Tee Slope Rating) = 16.9

So final differentials used to calculate for Handicap Index for the 4 of us will be

Derek: 10.3
ZX: 13.9
mloy: 16.9
TS: 25.4

These numbers are pretty different (and almost always lower) than just taking your gross score and subtracting the Par of the course to estimate your handicap.

Thanks, Derek. I've always wondered how the rating and slope affects the score differential. This is a very useful post as it explains the numbers in much better detail. The fact that it reveals more than that is also noteworthy
