| Hi all,
Would like some inputs on the diff of playing irons on firm vs soft ground. I am curious if the firmness of the ground would affect the compression of the golf ball when using irons causing reduction of distance. Would we need to club down if playing on soft ground ?
Thanks | |

| This is a very chiamp question Wonder if we contact the ball first, whether a soft and firm ground make any difference? | |

| I've realized that with wet ground, I get better shots with my ball placed further back, i.e. closer to my right foot. Don't know if it's cause I'm just an inconsistent golfer (which is quite possible). | |

| in my experience, everyone who strikes the Golf ball well will naturally compressed the ball well.
Unless we hit a "Fat Shot"
I think everything depends on the golf ball we used.
Lets say in my country, there are two season's Dry & Rainy days
for dry months, I prefer to used those Tour ball for those Par 3 for better bite and for those long Par 5, I used those soft & distance ball to gain distance.
for Rainy days, I normally "Over club" and used those Soft 2 core golf ball like
Srixon AD333 / Srixon Soft Feel / Nike PD 2 / or E6
In my experience, if I used those 3 core ball the ball would sometimes submerged inside the wet soak fairway.
I usually bring 6 soft feel balls & 6 3 core ball and alternately play them depending on the length and fairway shape.

| Logically, if we strike ball first, then divot, I think there should be no difference. I believe that is how we should hit ideally. | |

| For soft and muddy ground after rain, need to up club as the club head will get caught once it enters the ground and difficult to follow through. | |

| No difference for me, at most half a club shorter. Balls is also more receptive on the greens due to the dampness. | |

Thanks When you see the difference your ball land on fairway and buggy track, you will know the answer to your question. The firmer ground will allow your ball to go further, a softer ground will absorb more energy thus reducing your ball distance. So is the bunker will greatly reduce your ball distance. You will need to up your club when playing on softer ground. You may also need to have a clean sweep and avoid divot totally. Just my 2c.

| Hi bros, Sorri to dig up tis old thread... Jus tat I had a recent experience on last fri game... Realized tat when playin off soggy ground condition I am short by 1/2-1 club length versus normal or damp conditions... Likely due to my poor golfing skills but the consistency in loss of distance on soggy ground conditions makes me wonder... Any bro able to help? And temp measure for me is to club longer... | |

| Hi Robert, soggy ground exposes our ball striking...if we don't hit ball first, then turf second, the club will dig more and miss the clubs sweet spot. However, if your club has enough bounce, it may help.
I've seen super slow motion video of impact moment and the ball just took off without hitting ground while the clubs continue to hit the ground thereafter.
On soggy grounds, I kind of stole rss move and just try pivot on my left leg..avoid getting my weight behind. Anything but fat shot really

Btw does the golf ball sits slightly into the ground? I second to PS quote. Clean sweep definately on whichever club u ve in yr hands. And choke dwn yr grip alittle or more dependence on yr stance, dwn a club. (My personal preference) And finally think of yr fairway bunker shot now.

| I find no distance difference eh. I take take same swing take the same big fat usual divot and ball still carries same distance. No run only which is great haha. | |

Btw does the golf ball sits slightly into the ground? Robert, if your ball is in a divot no relieve, but if your ball slightly plug, u can always marked, cleaned and placed but not nearer to the hole. Of cos it can only be done if your ball on the fairway or first cut.
