| Now with so much rain and the course can get pretty soggy and balls get plug very easily. And sometimes can't even find them. #$%@%. Would like to know how plug ball should be played. For me, I pick up the ball, sometimes even have to dig it out, clean it and place it. I noticed that some golfers, pick it up, clean it and make a drop instead of placing it. Which one is correct ah? Oh ya...one more question. If unable to find a plug ball even if flight mates saw it but when get there can't find it. is that considered as a lost ball? | |

| Place it lah aiyoh!! If you drop, you get mud again on your face.. both literally and figuratively.
Yes, cant find = lost ball.

| What was the discussion we had the last time at RJCC, mloy? Was it that RJCC's rules are that plugged balls = drop, rather than place? Can't recall but I remember that there was confusion. I've always just placed the ball but I do clean it before placing it.

| Plug ball suppose to mark, clean and drop as near within 1 club length.
U only place ball if "preferred lie" is declared and in play but that can only be done if ball lands on fairway

| "Yes, cant find = lost ball." If it's a social game, get all in flight to agree first before teeing off. That is, if the course is wet with poor drainage and the possibility that the ball may be lost even if it's on the fairway/rough/bunker, you need a witness that the ball actually was on the fairway/rough/bunker. Thereafter drop the ball as close as you deem where the ball may be lost, without penalty. I use to have this arrangement with my flight mates to make it more friendly as it applies to all.
It's a social game (Unless it's a competition/tournament), you can set the rules anyway you want.

| Embedded ball If your ball has become embedded into the ground upon landing on a closely-mown area (fairway, fringe, green but not semi-rough or rough), you are allowed to pick it up, clean it and let it drop right next to the original spot. (Rule 25)
If u have iPhone, download free apps "Golf Rules". It is simple and have illustrations.. Very good for quick reference

| Generally speaking, winter rules or preferred lies applies only to the fairway. (It does not apply in a bunker, water hazard, nor on a putting green.
Barring a local rule, you should lift, clean and place within six inches (i can think of a number of ways to measure this)....

| U drop at the nearest point when its not water logged. They set golf rules that apply to most course. Golf is not meant to play with water logged courses..
We can only blame to course owner for not building the course properly and maintain them poorly..

Mark, lift, clean and Drop from shoulder height within 1 club length from Nearest Point Of Relief not nearer to the hole. Being a regular at RJCC, I dare say I am an expert on plugged balls!!!

With so much rain nowadays, hitting the centre of the fairway also can lose ball. So, this common sense modification to the rule works for me. As do winter rules and preferred lie. Because nowadays I find that almost every shot creates a mud ball.

Join premium course membership and u wont have this issue This is one statement that does not hold true. There is a members' club here in HCMC, about USD70K. Only facilities are course and driving range. After the raining season here. 9 holes had to be closed due to drainage problems. 2nd 9 hole permantly water logged now. Reason is owners tried to lower cost by cutting down on materials required to build the golf course. BTW, the club I talking about is Asahi's favourite in HCMC.

| If its really premium club, they wont cut down the cost when building the course. Serappong is one good example. After heavy rain and when players go out again, the coruse are good for play... | |

| No need too premium course like NSRCC, drainage also good. I think, if from the onset, the desire of the owner is to build a playable golf course with member's enjoyment in mind, such problem will not occur. NSRCC is a good example. OCC, not bad. Cutting back on the cost of base sand is the number one killer. | |

| Drainage makes a huge difference.
Bukit Tinggi and Awana Genting are around the same location in the highlands.
Both were notorious for plugged balls because of the wet climate.
Then Bukit Tinggi undertook extensive and expensive course renovation, relaying the foundation with a substantial layer of sand.
Bukit Tinggi now no longer plugs as much as Awana still does. I heard Awana is also planning its own multi-million ringgit re-foundation.
Used to be, losing balls in the center of the fairway after a rare beautiful long drive was immediately followed by losing my temper. Then common sense prevailed with the rule TDO mentioned above, and I can enjoy the water-logged course again.

Did a search for keyword "winter rules", and only found one mention of it in the rules section. http://www.usga.org/bookrule.aspx?id=14322 PART A: LOCAL RULES As provided in Rule 33-8a, the Committee may make and publish Local Rules for local abnormal conditions if they are consistent with the policy established in this Appendix. In addition, detailed information regarding acceptable and prohibited Local Rules is provided in "Decisions on the Rules of Golf" under Rule 33-8 and in "How to Conduct a Competition." If local abnormal conditions interfere with the proper playing of the game and the Committee considers it necessary to modify a Rule of Golf, authorization from the United States Golf Association must be obtained..... 4. Course Conditions - Mud, Extreme Wetness, Poor Conditions and Protection of the Course a. Lifting an Embedded Ball; Cleaning Course conditions that might interfere with proper playing of the game, including mud and extreme wetness, warranting relief for an embedded ball anywhere through the green or permitting lifting, cleaning and replacing a ball anywhere through the green or on a closely mown area through the green. b. "Preferred Lies" and "Winter Rules" Adverse conditions, including the poor condition of the course or the existence of mud, are sometimes so general, particularly during winter months, that the Committee may decide to grant relief by temporary Local Rule either to protect the course or to promote fair and pleasant play. The Local Rule should be withdrawn as soon as the conditions warrant. CommitteeThe "Committee" is the committee in charge of the competition or, if the matter does not arise in a competition, the committee in charge of the course. ============================== So, no, 4 guys at the 1st tee box cannot alter the rules. Only the committee can do so, and only after obtaining permission from the USGA. However, when playing with my buddies in this monsoon season, we all wipe and clean our mud balls, and take a drop if a ball is plugged, I'm afraid, without first obtaining permission from USGA or R&A. Guilty as charged.
