Why do ppl always talk abt their distance ??

funny. I found out in golf it realy doesn't matter what distance to what club. The thing that matter is that you hit the distance that you have in mind and in the direction that you intended to. That's all there is to it to get the ball into the hole....

In golf, distance is the only other quantitative measure besides your actual score and therefore it is easy to talk about. I imagine it's not very interesting talking about putting or chipping, etc. For example...

"I clearly saw that double breaking downslope line, and at the same time factored an extra 5 degrees of break because of the strong head wind, and through perfect execution I managed to sink that impossible 30-foot putt."

vs

"I bomb it 400m every single day!"

That's a great question. And you will find that the distance people say they hit. And what they actually hit are very very different!

Not a chance... About half that now a days...

But if u ask how far u hit the driver it is always the longest shot that is recalled...

the thrill of the long bomb is short lived. on some you don't even see the ball all the 400m way.
A good putt and chip, it's the one that will make one's heart skip a bit, literally at least for my case The beautiful part is that you get to see the ball from start to finish right to the fraction of seconds it missed, lips or sink into the whole followed by those familiar shout of joy / agony from the whole flight...

Its the thrill of a long bomb, good approach shot and Short putt for eagle or birdie. That is why Distance is important in the modern game.

I don't think its just ego, probably a sense of accomplishment

HOWEVER

for those that hit long (but ball is OB) Hit long but duff your chip or 3 putt....

Best to not brag about your distance.. because although no one is telling you to your face, EVERYBODY is laughing at you.

John Daly fatman can bomb the ball beyond 300 yards, but can he arrived?
Some times! He's a very good example if u wanna talk distance!

the other stuff is boring...unless u are talking 10 birdies or bogey free game.....even most talked about putts are those long sinkers......nobody tell their 'trilling' story about lagging their putt to 1 foot every single time or fairway hits/GIR unless followed by 10 birdies.....

distance is a big topic cause many even a beginner can hit it far (not consistent but bomb it once in a while)....a beginner cannot play in the 70s once in a while.

It gets a bit boring when someone talks about what is required to play in the 80s and having to go range and practice consistently, play consistently and even get coaching consistently.....practice, practice, practice (practice is really the only way to play better)

distance...a few tips here, a few tips there and a person with existing desirable physical attributes can bomb it already. Add in new driver technology (actually shaft more suited to player, most likely Japanese spec/shaft) + distance ball = extra distance!!!! no need for extra practice (if really practice driver, it will be for accuracy and consistency)

Ever hear stories about putts for Eagle? and a few of them even made it...doesnt matter the guy played 110, his eagle story surpass the guy who played a 'boring' 80+. Plus many ppl play in the 70s, even more in the 80s..Eagles are rarer..and so are 280-300m drives

Asians average drive + 3W distance is not good enough for 2 on a par 5 (even a short 400m par 5 is difficult for most)....therefore the obsession with distance and 2-on on a par 5 hole.

The fact that most golfers are casual golfer (no time to practice and even play much) and realistically have very little chance of playing to the 80s and 70s. Distance can be easily achieved (having seen a 60+ slight built man hit a 3 wood 250m...i think most ppl can, just not as straight and consistent as that man, but still 250m!!!!)

BTW that man was using a famous Japanese brand wood...very popular in Japan

305m/2 = 152.5m

Wah.. u can hit only 152.5m? My driver only reach 150m... Luckily my coach is able to driver further than me by 2.5m.. *phew*...

Both are important. Accuracy and distance. What I mean is; You have to have accurate distance, hitting consistent distances with each and every club, be it driver down to even the putter. ie. Always hitting your 7i with a small range of dispersion between 135-138m. Then you have to have low distance or left to right variance for your accuracy from your intended target.

"distance" player: they play almost the same score whether from black, blue, white or even red tee

"accuracy" player: their score improves as the tee gets shorter

I think distance is only an added advantage if one knows how to arrive fairly accurately. Otherwise, its prob meaningless. But for those who cant hit straight and only have distance to talk about, probably thats the only motivational factor which helps them stay in this game

Long hitters who bomb off the tee tend to hear 2 things from flight mates:

1: "good shot! walao ey....he sibay long"

or...

2: "FORRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!! Bro, you wanna take a provisional? "

Speaking from experience I see.. haha

I kinda notice those who always brags about their long drive, actually seldom talks about their score. And hearing those keeps bragging about their distance all day makes me wonder why don't they just enroll themselves to Long-Drive competition. Ha.. then I say they deserve the bragging right!

U don't understand why ppl can just be happy for what it is.... A fun game. Someone obviously enjoy a long drive so will brag about it...others enjoys low scores and will brag about it... Other will buaya to enjoy getting a trophy... And many enjoy the 19th hole most

Unfortunately I belong to the elite group of those who has nothing to brag abt my game at all....

Buaya is bigger then golf. It's a way of life and for some it's the way to make extra quick bucks for the helpless noobs or ignorant arogant fools.

Actually golf should be enjoyed in full rather than just low scores or longer drive distance Of course if we can play better is an added joy . But I enjoy the time spend after golf with my kakis over tea tarik or beer talking nonsense even when my score is bad on that day.

I think distance is one of the factor that will affect score. I can't drive the ball long but have to admit this fact.

Drive long has advantages but if the player cannot make use of that advantage, then it's still useless. To me, iron play and short game is still the key to winning.
