| I brought my 'sis' to the range. I saw how she swing and hit the ball far and nice trajectory. Okay, she learned to golf when she was 7 or 8? That was more than a decade ago. She had not touched the clubs since. And yet, she could pick it up easily. I guess her foundation was right. I swing and attempted to hit the ball. Whooops~ can't fly. She kept telling me, "Jie, slow down! slow down!" OKAY, I must admit. This was NOT the first time I hear this. But from a junior ... errr heeee.... kinda 'waken' me up. Dear 'old birds' 'experts' 'gurus' ... care to share some tips on how to slow down the swing? esp. the back swing?p/s: pardon me for the story ... wtd? i'm a cb afterall. | |

| hi, i'm not a guru but have the same problem as you. Try this drill: stop at the top of your swing for a second before you start your downswing. Deliberately stay at the top swing position. Hopefully this drill can help you improve your tempo. Note that this is only a drill but I do see many golfers building the pause at the top (maybe just a split second instead of a second) into their actual swing. HTH. | |

| GJ, We're all "constructed" differently ~ some of us talk fast / walk fast while there are others who enjoy slower pace of life. You just need to discover your rhythm & tempo. | |

| I too used to have this problem and usually when i am pressurized! haha...
There is this simple method - on your up swing do a 1 to 3 count before you hit the ball. I.e. 1 = 45deg from address before you cock your wrist... 2 = at the top of your swing 3 = down swing....
Remember to follow thru (an advice from a pro in Aust told me to simply 'throw the clubs out after you hit the ball' to facilitate a full follow thru...
So far its working well for me, but i went thru a tough time getting used to this tempo... now i my tempo is more controllable, most of the time.

| if you already have a naturally fast tempo, and you use Ai's swing as a model, it's going to be the extremes I'd try watching Mickey Wright's swing instead, over and over and over again until you get her tempo in your mind. Now hers is what I would call a beautiful swing/tempo. and she's old and wearing conservative wear on those vids so dont think you will be excited watching her | |

| I use to be very fast also (Asahi, no weird comments from you). What I did was at the top of my swing, I hold it and let it "set" before I initiate the down swing. This is because I realised I have very fast hips. (Asahi, behave yourself). The fast hips causes my hands to not be able to catch up hence causing alot of problems.
Most important is to go look for an instructor / coach. Even if it is for 1 lesson. It will greatly help you....

OKAY, I know I am utterly impatient. But really ... I wanna learn to slow down. Being too fast on the back swing (OR maybe it's the entire swing!?! ) is NOT helping me AT ALL.

| I start reciting the holes from a golf course I'm familiar with.....hole #1 avoid the right bunker, second shot, play short of water, then punch on, etc...that normally takes my mind off the current situation and helps me slow down....
i guess if it's a golf question.....pause slightly at the top of your swing......before starting your downswing......

| Maybe you are just trying to "murder" the ball... Thats why you swing it so fast... When my tempo gets abit out of whack... i tell myself to just slow it down... club up and swing easy | |

| if I read this right, it's slow initial down swing and gradually accelerate through the ball. if you start the downswing full speed, you'll be either out of balance or end up having to compensate somehow. Just like what other says it's not how you drive, similarly to swing personally I found it's not how fast your initial downswing is, it' show fast your club head is through impact. (I didn't say at impact, cause the swing goes through the ball, and not stop at the ball).
I got my swing tempo from practising without ball and listening to the whipping sounds of the club/stick/broom or whatever I can get my hand on. The whip sound should be hardest as the club / broom head/ stick tip pass through the ball position. The harder the sound the faster the club head and the further your ball will fly.

i guess if it's a golf question.....pause slightly at the top of your swing......before starting your downswing...... GF, I was reading your advice.... didn't quite get the 1st paragraph. Then you said " if it's a golf question" ... WTH, you mean you weren't answering my GOLF question? Okay back to the topic. I tried to pause but my 'momentum' gets haywire. Arghhh.... need to revisit a coach soon!!! daddyyyyyyy!!!!
