| Hi All,
Here is yet another question to garner information from your expert knowledge of the region.
My in-laws are coming over in April to help get us settled into our new condo and also vacation for a few weeks and we were looking to take them somewhere relatively close for a weekend getaway while they were here in Singapore.
Do you have any suggestions for places that are relatively close in proximity? I would like it if there was a good golf course there to play, and maybe some touristy sight seeing stuff as well.
Thanks again,
Dan | |

| Penang, Malaysia have only one golf course on the island and its quite a distant to travel to the mainland. Sightseeinng and food (local) are good.
Should try Phuket. Many golf courses to play but a bit expensive side.
Pattaya is another place that you can venture. Travel to BKK and it takes about 2 hours to Pattaya. Get a package tour as everything will be organised by them. There are some travel agency that do sightseeing and golf packages.

| For a weekend get away with golf...
I suppose flying is out? Batam and Bintan is an hour's ferry ride and there are a number of award winning courses.. I think Wilkang can recommend something.
Malaysia, Desaru beaches are good but you don't drive. So Malaysia is out, eventhough there are quite a number of golf courses there.
That's about all the options I can think of.

| For the close one, I can suggest Bintan. Very good courses there. The hotel is not bad also... beach resort type... | |

| Koh Samui has direct flights with Bangkok Airways, very nice beaches, more laid back tourist crowd than Phuket. Santiburi Golf Club is on top of a pretty high hill (or small mountain?)
Kuala Lumpur. The top courses there are for members only (good if you have insider connection or reciprocal) but even public Royal Selangor is nice.
I'm going to Da Nang Vietnam this June (play montgomery links and dunes). Direct flight with Silk Air. Remember China Beach with young and hot Dana Delaney?

| You should definitely go play to bintan and play at the Ria Bintan golf course, the views are really awesome and the turf is in very good condition. Definitely request to play the Ocean Nine. Their signature hole is on this nine.
It is expensive to play there but worth it.

| Hi All.
Thank you so much for your replies. It really gave us some to look over the next few weeks and see where we will go.
This forum is really great and you have been quite helpful on several occasions. I am looking forward to getting my sticks in about a week and a half and meeting up with some of you on the course and at the range.

| Sorry to 'rain' on the parade of those who suggest Ria Bintan but has anyone played there recently?
I have been 'travelling' past there almost on a daily basis thru the straits and let me just say that the amt of rainfall dumped over the area between Penggerang and Bintan + Batam has been sh!tloads for the past 2 weeks.
Not sure if the drainage system there is good enuff to provide decent course conditions.
I would go with Thailand. Fav short getaway destination in the region. Food is excellent too.

| I would choose batam over bintan anytime, decent courses and excellent seafood at 1/2 the price. Palm Springs on weekdays 1 nite stay with 2 rounds 18 holes is like S$158 staying at batam view hotel. Upgrade to the nice Turi Beach is probably another S$30 more. If you want some town shopping and massage, can try playing South Links and Indah Puri then put up at Novotel in town for like $300, still way cheaper than bintan. | |

| assuming wife going together with your inlaws.....
i would recommend phuket/langkawi/penang if they like a little of sightseeing n shopping apart from the laid-back beach thingy (cos thats bintang n batam is)
if they dont like the beach thingy, then KL/BBK would be the choice, i prefer the latter for the diversity.....
of cos, golf is available for all these places....

| Well, Bali is another option... it's just 2 hours flight, and it's a really good getaway place (with some world class golf courses there). | |
