New Cobra S3 Pro Combo Irons @ BFG Keppel Club

Feeling lucky today.

Once he came in, Ivan handed me 2 clubs, both still in plastic wrap. I looked. It was a 6i and a 9i, stamped 'S3 Pro'.

Unveiled: The new Cobra S3 Pro MB and CB forged irons, now available @ BFG Keppel. Demo clubs available for trial.


First Glance: I love Satin finishes on my irons. These clubs have the look that appeals oh so much to me.
Every bit the Player's irons look, they look so juicy and yummy, asking....NO, BEGGING to be hit.


Feel: I tried the 9i 1st. 3 words: Unfu@kin believably SHIOK!








Softness department, every bit as good as my Callaway X Prototypes. Shaft that came with this club was the NS Pro 950 ( hate this noodle) but I kept my objectivity and concentrated on the feel at impact. Didn't hit too many off centre hits so every shot feels oily smooth.

Setup was very very easy. I couldn't fault anything about it. Purists might say that the topline might be a tinge thicker but please, if you still want that look, go find a set of 1980s Macgregor VIP irons and stick with those.





These clubs were 1* stronger than std Player's clubs so I was definitely getting a good 5-7yds more than my own 9i.





Groove design, they should be conforming. I don't think it would suffer in the spin department in any way than other CC irons out there.




Not a whole lot of bounce compared to my Adams Pro Black MBs. That said, no digging effect was felt unlike my old 07 X Forged irons where if you tend to take big divots they will give you a problem. I think Cobra chanced upon the perfect bounce angle for the majority of players out there.



Sitting side by side with my own Cally Protos. Very similar and everything looking lovely and instilling confidence.





I moved on to the 6i after about 20 balls. These came in CBs and the demo was with a DG S200.







I must say that after putting Musclebacks in my bag for a good year+, hitting CBs again doesn't feel as satisfying as before. Nevertheless, they still perform well. Feel-wise, their MBs are wayyyy better but off-centre hits are not punishing I must say. Address position still looks good. No complaints in that dept too.

Checked their website and I think the option of ordering full CBs or MBs are available. Ivan is checking whether that will be an option for us here.

In the meantime, do go down for a hit. I think my 2011 bag is achanging already.

Oh, the new S3 woods are available for demo too. I have hit the driver and lets just say for a stock club, the feel and trajectory is way better than what the SFTP 2.0 with custom Blueboard is giving me.

Nice review Rex. I love the look of the S3 Pro Combos, they look damn classic.

Callaway had the extra grooves idea in their CC clubs 2nd quarter of last year already. I think Nike borrowed a page from them.

That said, I think 20XI sparks a major overhaul in their marketing campaign. Launch of a new Tour ball that spins less off driver hits and spins more on wedge shots (with chart data to back up their claim) plus new groove pattern in their 20XI wedges.

I have tested the Nike VR Pro Combos and blades back in Jan, albeit in an indoor simulator in US.

I must say Nike is going back to traditionalism. Their clubs are pretty ok in the feel department but somehow, they do not make them very user friendly. Their 3-5irons in the MBs are quite a throwback to the 80s and 90s where you need to be more precise in your ball striking. Very very small and knife sharp.

As for the combos, I owned the 1st gen pro combos that Nike came out with back in 2003-4 and I think there are similarities as well as some enhancement tweaks since then. (Forget the CCis and whatever disasters they came out with until now). Easier to hit and very playable.
