When to change shaft flex?

As we progress in golf, the typical route would probably be from R->S->X...->Senior

Question is, when do we know that we can or should change the flex? Are there any tell-tale signs e.g. ball flight etc? I know a club-fitter would be able to offer the best advice but only when appropriate. Just like going to a doctor, we only go if we feel ill and not just visit every now and then to ask if we are ill.

Tell tale signs : trust your feel. Too stiff on your hands or too whippy? Too heavy or too light? Too harsh or too soft?

ball flight signs: if dun wan to go clubfitter, then this one must wait for Birdman or DGman to answer

As our skills progress, our smash factor may go from 1.27 to 1.47 but for shaft flex to go from R to X? Probably not. Unless if you just passed PSLE, then got potential

not only flex.
with so many types of shafts with different shaft profiles.. butt stiff, mid stiff, tip stiff..
which one suits your swing?
how heavy? what swing weight and length to build it to? arghhh

Bro, any idea how Smash Factor is being measured? It is an indication of what?

If I'm not mistaken, it's the ratio of ball speed over swing speed. A measure of how efficient your power transfer is, something to that effect. Actual terms can be confirmed by DGman.

Smash factor of 1.5 is PGA/LPGA standard.

Dun look too much into the numbers, those are for the club fitter to know, we have an easier job( ya right). We just hit the damn ball.

Sure or not? I failed maths, don't confuse me leh... I just took calculator and seems like ball speed divided by swing speed then get the ratio of one point something.

how about the shaft weight.....Driver i am going from 55g to 65g..now thinking of going to 75g and drop 1/2 a flex.
