A message and probably dilemma as well from my fellow compatriots in Malaysia. Many friends coming and frequently visiting KL and golfing there, we are most welcomed to be there.

At the same time, SG golfers are urged not to be over generous with tipping caddy or assistants. The reason being is that this will cause more issues and jacks up the market rates for them as well in the long run. Save your money to spend it elsewhere i.e. beer or shopping or eating...

Please tip to the local standard of living like local golfers do.

Following are some rates to follow (per golfer)
- Caddy min MYR 15 to 25. 25 for good ones and not more.
- Cleaning of shoes MYR 5 only.

An example in Thailand. We played in Panya Indra - 4 balls. After the game, we gave 800 baht. We were told that its not enough, market rates in Panya is 300 baht per person. We been playing for sometime, we know well that it is 200 baht per golf is pretty standard. Korean even pay lesser than that.

For Royal Johor, Mkt rate for tips is RM50 as they need to walk with you and carry.

Is that ok?

As far as I'm concerned, tip what you think is a fair amount. What others tip may be appropriate to them but it doesn't have to be what you tip. Be the judge of the service you have received and remunerate accordingly.

I'm just tired of hearing the words "market rate." I've lived long enough in Malaysia to know that what is market rate salary is somewhat below average for the rest of the world. It sickens me.

yup i agree. Sometimes following the so-called market rates may not be a good thing. Whether good or bad service, the difference doesn't seem to be big and cannot differentiate good and bad caddies. I think this tend to encourage poor service. So give what you think is fair to the caddies...
