| Actually. thinking over the issue... Neh, not interested anymore; Now, can someone please explain to me how the Baltic Dry freight index implicates on the cost of shipping dry bulk from China; and how this realtes to the cost of golf clubs on a global basis? | |

| Actually, the baltic dry index is for freight between the most popular ports of the world. It is a very good indicator of domestic consumption for foreign goods. In particular, the domestic consumption of good from Asia into the US and the UK. Or for eg: Iron Ore into China, Flat panels out of Korea into the USA....
Ironically, the gauge now is rather useful to gauge the quantity of EMPTY containers going back to China and the number of vessels required to bring them back. YES! China imports empty freight containers. As a nett exporter, they have to ship in empty containers right?
The Baltic Indices are a real good practical gauge of global demand.
Anyway, in the event of war, two things occur preemptively. 1. The Baltic Indices drop like a tonne of bricks. Reason is in relation to early knowledge of item 2. 2. Marine companies are called from around the world to retune combat vessels. tolerences are tightened so that the vessels can run faster. As the Marine and Shipping industries are very much related. Shipping co would usually have a heads up that an event is going to occur. Thus the dock their vessels earlier.
As we are going to war at Warren tomorrow, I am following the baltic indices rather closely now!
Now was that that an interesting read.

| You know. A client once told me. To know if the market is good or bad, all you need to do is to look out to East Coast and observe the number of ships docked out at sea. A lot of those ships are docked out at international waters because there is simply no cargo for them. Thats probably the most cost efficient options for them. Of course, if the economy is good, the ships will not be there as they will be busy shuttling from port to port. Sounds to me quite logical.....
G_Man: you prob need to monitor ViX as well....

The Baltic Dry Index actually more implicates the cost of shipping dry bulk to China which then feeds into the price of raw materials. From wikipedia: The index provides "an assessment of the price of moving the major raw materials by sea. Taking in 26 shipping routes measured on a timecharter and voyage basis, the index covers Handymax, Panamax, and Capesize dry bulk carriers carrying a range of commodities including coal, iron ore and grain But raw materials only make up a small percentage of actual costs of golf clubs. The main costs are: Sponsorship of tour players Advertising Middle men & distribution channel Thats where the container freight costs would come in. Getting the clubs from the factory to the store. You can buy the full report from: http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/227053 where it covers - Golf club market breakdown by type of raw material (steel, carbon composites, etc.) used. So, the short answer is, it has little effect. nientsu: What your client says is correct. http://business.theage.com.au/business/industry-at-sea-for-ships-marooned-off-singapore-20090514-b4r9.html

Hehehehe.hahahaha... Don't talk to me about shipping. It's way too expensive these days to ship anything from the US. I used to enjoy Amazon Prime which gave me free 2-day shipping door-to-door. Oh... OT? Oh well.
