While listening to them, I have to say, their pronounciation..definitely is interesting.....some names are so tough and tongue twisting...but US chaps just bring the hip to it..with the way they pronounce.

Take this chap fm Thailand : Pariya J'something'/.................they call him Pari-J.....( I think).....wow..super cool..

Maybe I should get my US fren to pronounce Seasoned Beginner and see if somehting hip come out...

Hope he'll be able to perform well tomorrow. If he wins...who knows we may see him in the PGA tour. Very Happy

Personally, I think it's disrespectful of the person and Asian culture as whole. When in Rome do as the Romans do.

If they are commentating in this part of the world, they should take the effort to learn how to pronounce names as they are in our part of the world. Try mis-pronouncing or mangling one of the western pros names, you'll get a faceful for sure.

If they regard themselves highly as knowledgeable professional commentators....

so lets say MM wins tomorrow...

Does that mean he gets his PGA card for next year?????? this is mind blowing....when we have some pretty well known folks fighting in Q-school....

nothing against MM and great if that happens.....but ...just weird lor

Not sure I agree with your conclusion of "disrespectful"; that's a pretty strong word.

BUT, I do agree with your overall assessment.

Many names are difficult to pronounce and learn.......but that is what commentators are PAID handsomely to do..it's their job!

Creating and using nick-names in a broadcast snacks of Laziness and an interest level at the bottom of the scale.

If it is a well known nick and the person gives his explicit permission for it to be used in a broadcast, that's diff, but here it is just plain wrong.

I have to agrre with Kopi Towkay,in this case it was actually Pari-J's idea...

and it is not here alone, no offence but in Korea my name was Arren Kerry, the L"s were hard to pronounce...

Half the world say Retief is Goosen, the other half Hoosen... he is used to it....

Try your best but make sure it is spelt right on the cheque! Beer

Understandable in Korea where English isn't the first language SH. Hope you didn't wince every time you heard your name. Smile

If you recall this year's British Open where Luis Oosthuizen won, there was some discussion (was it Peter Alliss?) on how his name was supposed to be pronounced. That was handled nicely.

KT, if I may put it context, I considered it 'desrespectful' because it is TV where what is uttered reaches out to millions who may have the sometimes mistaken impression that commentators are knowledgeable professionals in all they say. Everything is magnified on the world stage. Imagine a commentator getting the pronunciation of Jose Mourinho's first name mixed up with that of Jose Carreras. Shocked

Pains are taken to ensure titles and names of dignitaries are announced correctly on their arrival, any mistake is considered a huge boo boo. By extension, that same courtesy should be accorded to each and every person no matter who they are. I try my utmost to ensure I get a name right whenever I am on stage. If I mis-pronounce a name, I have embarrassed that person.

I should know, my name is not the easiest to pronounce and I have heard it mangled countless times, but I have learned to come to terms with that. Hoobert, Hubbard, and so it goes.... ROFL

Roger all. I see your point & it makes a lot of sense.

BTW, you wouldn't happen to be related to the 31st President of the USA.... Hoober Hebert now would you?

I just cannot believe that the commentators keep mentioning that this will be mardan's biggest paycheck from a touranment. If i remember correctly, he won the touranment at laguna quite a few years back for a million dollars right?

i don't think the winning is counted on the Asian Tour standings as it is co sanctioned.

this week they are off to HSBC and we will see what happens.

still it is a good week for MM and to secure sponsorship for next year.

Since this is co-sanction, will it give MM an opportunity to be in US PGA?
