| While watching the golf games on telly, I heard many times the commetator said he or she is an aggressive golfer.... I will presume that everytime the golfer go for the pin regardless of pin location.....correct?
or is there another meaning to it?
If someone being a short hitter ..(eg. myself, even sometimes layup during putting)......can a short hitter (literally) can be an aggressive golfer ?

| Hey Duv, id also like to ask another question along these lines..
Pros, usually after a good round, are often quoted to say : " i just gotta be patient out there, or i was able to play patiently..."
what does playing patient mean? Patient as opposed to playing in a hurry?
Thanks for the insights!

| Its like the scenario between the young chap in Ryders cup, specifically between Rory and Fowler. Both of them on 18th hole. Both want to reach the greens and complete the task at hand.
One chose a risky path - 3W, trying to on the hole in 2, the other chose a safer path to lay up.

Being patient means, dont try to force anything, dont take unneeded risks, Fairways and greens and the birdies will come... (for others not me..) but if you get impatient and try to force a birdie...by cutting a corner, going over trees, attack a sucker pin... then usually disaster follows....

| WRT being aggressive, when u play to a certain std, there will lines n shots where most golfers will not go for esp when the risk is high but the reward will be marginally better. These 'aggressive' golfers will more often than not, go for these risk-n-reward shots more so than most ppl.
WRT being patient, it means to play golf one shot at a time. Sounds simpler than it actually is but tough even for the best players in the world.
An eg is to concentrate on the shot at hand u are facing, not think about the narrow drive u have to face on the next hole or where to put it on the slippery green 3 holes later. Many ppl get ahead of themselves when they start playing well initially and quicken their tempo, pre-shot routine n pace only to start hitting 'unforced error' type of shots.

| Hi Duval, here are some of my thoughts! I believe it takes a certain level of technical skill to go for pins. Of course people like me, unable to control the distance and direction of the ball as consistently as I would like, would profit more score-wise from playing safe most of the time.
I think when they say a pro on tv is aggressive, it does mean that he takes more calculated risks and goes for difficult pins. Fowler and Mcilroy are examples of aggressive players. So are Woods and Mickelson. In one of my discussion with my coach though, she mentioned that she thinks Mickelson "is an idiot" because sometimes he chooses to show off and takes too much risks, despite being very very talented. Personally I agree, but that's just us. Mickelson himself says it's not in his nature not to be aggressive but I think it's taken to an extreme with him.
Other than aggressive shot selection, i think aggressive players are labelled as such also because they have the ability to play shots with belief and confidence during crunch time. We often fail at difficult shots because we are mentally affected by the difficulty of the shot. e.g. steep bunker shots which require an aggressive swing. I believe these guys fail less because they are able to maintain that aggressive mentality and make good swings even under pressure.

| you can be aggressive when you know where your misses are and cater for that... if your 3 wood is not good and you know that you will usually slice it... you can aim more to the left so that if you really slice it, at most it is at the right side of the fairway/green and still in play... of course have to take into account if it is ok to land on the right... if too many bunkers on the right then may not worth the risk...
If the right side is ok and you take the risk and slice it... you may be left with a chip tats all... it may worth the risk...

| agressive is agressive lah. Go for the pin, all the time and do take risk. On our term : CHiong lah.. Most tournament pin placement on a few holes are near hazards (water / bunker etc), and normally you will see people go for the safe bet by going to the back of the green and use the slope to let the ball roll back to the hole etc, but some are going straight for the pin. Of course if you make it it will feel great, but if you miss just by a hair width you end up in hazzard. For us ordinary people, even when we try to play safe (go middle of the green) due to inability to control direction / flight / distance sometimes become aggressive (unintentionally) oh well maybe that's just me. | |

| aggressive often being linked to "Risk and Reward"... you risk and successful, you get rewarded you risk and unsuccessful, you get busted and call yourself retarted but of course there are times you need to be aggressive and there are times you just need to play conservatively... | |
