PostSubject: Quitting Smoking   Quitting Smoking I_icon_minitimeThu Aug 06, 2009 9:39 pm

Hey guys! I've been smoking for close to 5 years now and i'm currently on my 3rd day of no ciggies! i just thought, why am i spending so much on ciggs? i could use the money to buy me more golf things lah! haha that and i honestly think it's a disgusting habit that stains the teeth and deteriorates your health.

but i don't know whether it's the lack of smokes or nicotine but my nose is runny, i feel like stabbing everyone around me and i'm lethargic! I've even had a dream of me having a smoke last night! hahaha hopefully i'll make it to next week and the week after that and then i'll be scott free! Smile

Just wondering if anyone ever quit before and how was it like?

I'm not sure whether the sensation you're feeling is appropriate as I've not smoked before. That said, I think you're doing a great job and I'd urge you to keep it up! Smile

Bro ! Smoking is bad for you, in golf, it one of the seven deadly sins....the other 6, must ask rabbi technospaz to sermon you .... 8)

Giving up smoking is very difficult up hill task, and i must admire you with such determination and courage just to start a journey of a smoke free life. Neutral

Please give yourself all the credits for such unselfish act to those close to you ie your familys and loves one..... giving them clean air everytime. Face Hug

keep away from smoking starts from yourself, keep reading golf maz, go to BF and disturb Eric, go to the range more as now all golf range is SMOKE FREE !!!

Live up to 73 and more like Uncle Ah Tee...don't drink, don't smoke, don't womanize....attend Church every Sunday morning...i will pray for you bro ironfist, please PM me your name....and account number.... HELP

You can do it bro, like you said before, one packet of cig. cost $20+++, if you stop for 3 to 4 days, you could buy 2 dozen of your fav golf balls. One year down the road, one new set of Golf plus a Skin to go with it ! Swing

I know after this post alot of smoker will hantam me....it okay bro....i do it for you !!!!

UL

Peace

Congrads on your third day of attempting to quit smoking, If I could I would. But as I have been on Champix for the better half of the year gone by. Its been hard, even with the medical help.

I once got to 2 weeks. Thats it... So please push on, and there really is a lot of temptation out there.

I have been smoking for the last 20 years. I was a early starter in this regard. Guess NewPort and Alpine arent even available now... It been that long. And while I have thought about it. The recursive habit of actually having a pack with me and wiping out a smoke as an when was too hard to give up...

Hi bro,

I started when i was 19, during my NS & I quit when my wifey gave birth to my 1st baby. For me the determination of not making my family a secondary smoker was the wakeup call.
Ciggie free for 8 years now.

I did not do cold turkey like you , instead I reduced my ciggies week by week.
Process teken : 2 - 3 mths.

Don't give up! Think about the $$$ u will be saving & the $$$ saved can be channel to buying golf products, hehe !

cheers

PostSubject: Re: Quitting Smoking   Quitting Smoking I_icon_minitimeFri Aug 07, 2009 1:08 am

hi bro, i feel you totally as to what you are talking about.

i have been smoking for about 5 or 6 years already.. not as long as some of the others here, but long enough to feel the effects.
in the past year (2009) i have tried quitting smoking twice. the first time, i went cigg-less for 2 months, before starting again somehow or other.
the second time, it was 3 weeks plus, and then it started again.

the thing is, ciggarette smoking is not only a physical addiction, but also a psychological addiction.

i'm sure at this point of time, where you are, you are feeling the physical addiction pretty strongly. runny nose, lethargy, these are all very common. i don't suggest you go cold turkey, but rather, do it like Jawerez, who gradually cut down.. this makes it much easier on your body.. the thing is, your body could sometimes go into shock if suddenly there is no nicotine, and in the long run, it is a rather harmful process... this was related to me by my grandfather, who studied chinese medicine for a long time... in fact, u notice alot of real life experience, where people who smoke for years suddenly quit smoking then something bad happens.. this normally happens to elderly folks who have been smoking for donkey years..

anyway, the psychological addiction is the hard part. i'm sure many smokers will agree with me, that smoking is very much a psychological and emotional crutch.. e.g. when we are stressed, we immediately pick up a ciggarette even if u dun smoke it, but u just put it in ur mouth... or when we are sad, etc. but the point is that even 1 or 2 months down the road, when your body has adapted to no nicotine, there will be times when you suddenly feel like picking up a stick again for some reason.. this is the most crucial stage, and this is where i faltered... once you allow yourself to pick up the stick again, most probably it will be a downhill slide from there.. just like me.. the thing is to block out this psychological addiction, but i am unsure as to how to advise you to go about doing it, because i myself am not able to do it, even after continuously psycho-ing myself etc.. '

i am also consciously trying to reduce my cigg intake as well as trying to work out a concrete plan to quit, but somehow, it is really really difficult, as there is a strong social element to it, and everytime i tell my friends i am quitting, somehow, they will always still offer me ciggarettes.. and it is also very hard to resist the temptation especially when these jokers smoke around u, and u pick up the smell of the ciggarette smoke.. trust me.. u will know what i am talking about once u stopped for 2 weeks... sometimes just the smell of ciggarette alone will make you steam like mad... there was once when i really tried breathing heavily everytime i smelled a ciggarette to get some nicotine kick.. it didn't really work and drove me crazy..

anyway, sorry for talking this cock bull story here, just relating some of my experiences to help you in your onward fight against cigarettes.

remember... every puff... is a handcuff...

Bro Ironfist,

Congrats on your 3rd day!

I myself hv stopped smoking for 1 yr 10 mths. Before that I was smoking around 10 - 15 sticks a day for 12 yrs, more if I m having drinks, playing mahjong or golfing. 1 day it just occurred to me the amount of $ i m spending on ciggies, plus the morbid idea of being such a burden to my family if i happen to develop smoking-related illness, & I just stopped the next day.

Lucky for me, my body was not nicotine or any cigarette-related chemicals dependent, thus didn't hv any adverse physical side effects or withdrawal syndromes. My move made my family very happy & relieved. Psychologically I had some obstacles to overcome in the beginning stage, even had a few dreams of smoking within the initial 3 months.

To quit is definitely the right thing to do. It's just a matter of whether you can do it so abruptly or gradually. If there are no physical side effects, i would say push on & don't look back. If it helps, sit down with the person you love most, & promise him/her that you will stop smoking, & ask this person to help you along.

Going to the range to hit balls is 1 great way to take your mind off it.

Hooray

Quit if you really want to; not because ppl tell you it's better for you etc... Very Happy

I smoked for more than 10years before I quit. I had tried a several times to quit before.
Finally I psyched myself up to quit. Spent quite a long time debating whether to quit or not; for me it was not so much the saving of money or the health issues, but rather the addiction/dependency which I did not like. Like before do something, need to smoke;wake up, first thing look for smoke; go toilet oso need to smoke...

I did it cold turkey; for me the first 2 weeks were easy; the withdrawal symptoms etc, were not that bad, since I was mentally really psyched to quit. But after that.. it got bad, after a few weeks, I would be thinking, hey not so bad what, I'm not addicted to it. I can quit anytime I want. Then it'll be one ciggie with the boys; another ciggie when out having drinks..next thing I knew I was puffing away heavily again. That's how I failed the first few times.

Today I think it's slightly easier to quit smoking, just because there are fewer places where you can smoke freely/easily. I'm happy to have stopped smoking; I don't get tired so easily and the clothes don't smell so much (wash my skins lah Very Happy ). But I don't really think I saved a lot of $; you'll just blow the money on other crap... Next; I'll have to learn to cut down on drinking so much.. hahahaa

Good Luck.. cheers

I have been smoking for more than 3 decades, I enjoy my smokes...
Tried many ways to stop, patch, accupuncture, cold turkey and was given Champix by my cardiologist but I dare not try. ( http://www.champixinfo.co.uk/ ). Have cut down to abt 20 stix a day.
