What's your purpose for playing golf?

Just a question a taxi uncle asked me.
I went to the range this afternoon, followed by a movie.
Took a cab home (thought gonna meet some frens, but then ... oh well...*shrugs*)

Anyway, the taxi uncle asked if I was playing golf.
I answered, "Yes." And he told me to watch out of injuries etc.

He then asked me my purpose of playing the sport.
I pondered. "To pass time.", I told him.

He then said, "If that's your purpose, then I say you'd better stop. Don't continue to throw money into the drain. That amount of $$ may be used for better purposes."

I was like ... oh sheesh ... uncle, I just spent $$$$$$$ on my clubs!

He carried on to say ... that if my purpose is to entertain business clients, whereby there's return; then by all means carry on. But if I am just playing for fun, then better not continue throwing the money into the drain.

Frankly, he does have his point. What do you think??

Nah ... uncle wasn't trying to discourage me.
He just wants me to be sure of what I wanna do and what I wanna achieve at the end of the day.

Purpose ? For me :

1. Sports
2. Mental game (self improvement).
3. Networking.
4. Pleasure (having birdies and pars)
5. Making new friends.
6. Possible family game in the future

not everything can get returns lorr..

i learnt golf 2 years ago just to try out a new sport. but i got hooked to it after my initial ten lessons. now i get thrills & satisfaction when my score drops or get a birdie.. and of course, i get to know many people through golf. so no regrets..

in asia where golf is expensive, yes, we always like to say singaporeans are practical pple. don't waste money.

in the US where golf can be played by the masses, and they use it for some programs to help the less privileged, i guess its not very expensive.

golf used to be a elite's game, the brits call it the gentlemen's game. so you know how it was like, it was used to differentiate different social classes.

from the short history above, you know roughly what i think.. its just a game. ben hogan, mark twain.. all those guys had something to say about golf. i like and hate golf at the same time.. i can drop it anytime i want, yet i want to hit the ball again later..

if one day it just gets boring hitting the ball anymore, i'll just stop playing.
i guess that's my reason not to play golf. i'll do anything i like, but if i stop liking it, i'll stop.

reason = because i love the game.

golf or gamble is a hobby.... reason to golf = reason to gamble

Actually before this forum, I was like a wondering aimlessly golfer, like a lost soul searching for a purpose, like a ship sailing without a captain on board , a driver without GPS, a putter who putts without reading the green......in other words, no purpose.


BUT since I join this forum, I have a purpose now......it is to contribute to this thread.


Other reason.....I just want to be like TIGER, Phil.....blah blah.............................Slinger, Birdman, GolfChowk, MC, S70B, Daren.........................................blah blah blah..............

OK, my real purpose is to evangelize golf and bring it to all parts of the world to solve and strive for world peace.

Yes and no. Depends on individuals...

It is a good question but it is difficult for the a non-golfer to understand. No doubt, golf is not cheap compared to many other sports.

- However, I felt it is a satisfaction personal achievement to challenge yourself when you play from under 100, 90, 80 and single hcp

- The feeling of satisfaction can only be felt and understand by a golfer only.

- Golfing might contribute to some business or social network easier and greater opportunity compare to other sports.

- Also many job interview was conducted in a golf course, when your future superior will know whether you are a patience, cheaper, lair, bad attitudes .. etc person after a round of golf.

- Golf is another sport that you can stay health, control mental, attitude, mood and self control

- Golf is a fair when you can play with any player but does not mean you will sure to lose because of the HCP given. Try playing bowling, tennis, badminton, snooker .. etc. You can already known the very high % rate whom the winner be, when a strong playing against a weaker player.

- No doubt, monies is important in life but saying golf is like " dropping monies into the drain" might be over the limit to claim. You need only a set complete of golf and hitting balls in the driving range. How much does this really cost ? We play within our limit. I do not think we need to buy a golf club membership, play 8 times a month, change golf equipment every couple of months.

I would suggest if anybody will ask you the same answer again. Just said " I presume you are not a golfer when you ask me this question. If so, it is rather difficult for me to answer you "
