Wedges Degrees & Bounce Combination Empty
PostSubject: Wedges Degrees & Bounce Combination   Wedges Degrees & Bounce Combination I_icon_minitimeWed Jun 02, 2010 9:57 pm

Not sure if this have been posted. Please advise if there is a thread before.

I notice most have 52*, 56* & 60* in their bags.

However, I also notice golfers generally chose the bounce of 52* and 60* are quite the same, but 56* usually with much higher bounce, e.g. 52* 10, 56*14 and 60*10, or 52*08, 56*12 and 60*08.

Any wisdom in this?

Cyp

I dun think MT is asking for fitting of wedges but more on why the bounces for the in between wedge is usually more than the AW and the LW.

I have asked myself this question as well. I am on a 52/10, 56/14 and 60/10.

If bounce is meant not for tight lies and for roughs and bunkers, shldnt the 60 be a 14 is well?

In a nutshell, how much bounce you need depends on your angle of attack, are you a sweeper or a digger? And on the turf conditions, firm or soft?

A more detailed explanation is on the Titleist Vokey Wedge site. Don't get a headache!

If I may....

Both the gap (52) and lob (60) wedges are meant for playing off turf, which requires less bounce to do so. The sand wedge requires more bounce to glide through sand, making it easier to play bunker shots. If there is insufficient bounce, the sand wedge will just get stuck in the sand, leaving your ball in the same situation. There are however sand wedges with less bounce, or more, for those who play courses with coarser/firmer sand or powdery soft sand as the case may be. Personally, I prefer to play out of bunkers with the lob (60) for a higher softer shot even though there is less bounce, using only the sand wedge for longer bunker shots and chipping around the green. My lob wedge has less bounce and a wider sole versus the sand wedge which has more bounce and a narrower sole. Both are TaylorMade TP Y cutters.

Having too much bounce on a lob wedge will cause the club to literally bounce off the turf resulting in topping the ball. And since the objective of the lob wedge is to get under the ball for a lofted shot, the leading edge needs to be close to the ground, requiring less bounce. Set a lob and sand wedge on the floor side by side and you will see that the leading edge of the sand wedge sits above the ground while the lob sits closer to the ground. So if you ever encounter a hard pan lie, the lob wedge is the club to use and not the sand wedge. Still a tricky shot to execute because of the precise nipping of the ball required.

There are times you see wedges with names like DSG (dynamic sole grind) or C grind. These grinds allow for greater versatility in executing finesse shots with open faces. The sole is ground in such a way that the bounce angle is not constant, depending on how you set the clubface. The full bounce angle is derived when you set the face square, getting progressively less the more you open the clubface, allowing the leading edge of the club to stay as close to the ground as possible.

Bob Vokey himself has tons of grinds listed in the link below. It also illustrates how bounce works hand in hand with sole width, relief, and camber to form different grinds to suit the playing styles of the pros. Click on "read more".

Hope I've helped some. Very Happy

Most welcome Mengteck71, Asahi and Jurongtiger. Very Happy

Something to beware of on special grinds. They can make the sand wedge tricky and unforgiving to use. Most of us are better off using sand wedges with regular ground sole, that is, a sole with a constant bounce angle and wider sole is easier of play out of the bunkers.

We just have to be honest with ourselves and answer two questions.

Do I consistently get out of the sand with control?

Do I play with more than that one basic shot the sand wedge/lob wedge is designed for around the green reasonably well?

If the answer is a yes, then special grinds will be more of a help than hindrance since less bounce could mean more chinks and duffs.

For those who tend to stick the club in the ground or hit fat chunks, a wedge with more bounce and a wider sole will help with better contact. That's why game improvement irons have very wide soles and blades for better players have narrower soles for shotmaking.
