Ok...your digging is causing by an over steep downswing
which is caused by an outside in swing path.
What you need to do is to setup your fairway wood next
to a wall and do shadow swings. The wall should get rid of
the steepness since you do not want to be hitting that.

Face on to the wall or back to the wall???

Rereading some of the posts from the "gurus" i dont think we are very clear in some of the drills we prescribe...

Above is a good drill, but remember we are talking to newbies so maybe we need to explain a bit more.... Very Happy

Bro, take it with a pinch of salt. The idea is to have the sensation that your club head cant swing out beyond the intended target line. thus restricting the outside to in. You can do this against a curtain is you want.

Wa kao.
U used your driver to hit the wall? *pain*

My whole set of club once hit the ground.. *Damn Pain*
(Stupid buggy strap not tied properly, bag fell down)

In the past, when just started learning, I used to sweep but I think the chances of hitting thin is quite high.
Eg. When address, I stretch my arms straight out. Imagine when hitting volleyball.
Hence, my swing plane is rather flat/horizontal

Then I started to hit down after coach advice, then i play better with woods.
But sometimes do hit fat.
Eg. When address, my hand relax facing down the ground. Imagine I am feeding a cat.
Hence my swing plan is steeper/vertical.

Then, I started to incorporate hitting down, swinging my body rather than pushing my hand to hit down.. relax.. I hit consistently straight & far.

Then after some time of travelling, now I am back to square one..
Inconsistent. Trying to find the feeling back. Cun wait to go back SG for range session.

pale

I think I will get swung before even take my stance....

So ... can I conclude that I still need to hit down on the ball when using woods i.e. take some divots?

I am not sure I am doing correctly..
In the past when I am hitting well, my divot is very thin and under the ball position. (sometimes just infront)

So i don't know if that's considered a divot.

I do use woods in bunker as well. I quite like to do that.
similarly, i just graze the sand a little.

Thanks short hitter for the reminder...

The idea with fairway woods and long irons is to
pinch down on the ball trying to take a small divot which may or may not happen.

Think about it...if the sweetspot of the club begins on
the 5th or 6th groove of the clubface then to get that
on the ball requires a downward blow with the shaft
leaning towards the target at impact.

Ah finally... an answer that I need... so it is not so much of sweeping rather it's the angle of downward blow. So this is why it is easier to use the woods from the tee.
Thank you all for your patience...

Dat's why he called "Golf Guru" on his avatar's ID.

Me going nite-nite as me and 11 others from Singapore have to play two competition rounds (best ball & fourball) against a 12-man Malaysia team across the causeway Sat & Sun in Malacca.

Me will be seeing a few of the other GR forum members as my Singapore team-mates.

FYI, last year, the Singapore team won the inaugural CC 2008 match.

More about this later.

Well, GG. We were beaten by the Malaysia team 7- 5 after two days worth of very close competition--all the wins-losses were merely one-ups or one-downs at the end of 18 holes.

However, some of our best players were not in top form for various reasons. There were 12 players representing each country.

Team Malaysia practiced hard over the last few months and they added some better players as they were beaten (by a thin margin) by Team Singapore at last year's inaugural event held at Horizon Hills.

This year's venue was tough--Orna G&CC in Malacca (blue tees). This club was the Asian Tour Q-School back in 2001-2003. Very punshing if U get into trouble--OB, water or sloping ruff. Slope is around 130.

Undulating hard-to-read greens also. And then there's the 12th island green. My team mate BT and I held the two Malaysians at bay until the last three holes which cost us the match by one down.

Anyways, all had a blast and we hope to re-claim the trophy cup again next year under the supervision of a different Team Singapore capt and vice capt!
