Subject: How to make your iron shot roll more? Sun Jan 18, 2015 10:05 am
Hi grains,
Not sure if any bro n sis has experience this problem. Quite a number of my iron shot will not roll very much E.g 8-9i most time will not roll more than 3 feet. Is that usual? Wanted to have more roll so Ball will have better chance to move towards the flag. Appreciate any sharing
Thank you.

It's a happy problem. Use 7 iron for more roll

May be due to the sharp grooves due to new clubs. So behaviour of ball roll is slightly different.
Did you change your irons recently?

Bro, why you need to roll scoring clubs so much? 7i to PW/SW/GW are scoring clubs aka clubs for approach shots ... People strive to achieve pin high approach shots for these high lofted clubs for soft landing ...
If you want to roll your ball more, bring the ball trajectory down ... Juz like doing a knockdown shot ... To do this, position the ball slightly back of centre, execute a normal full swing but finish it in 3/4 position ... (i.e. backswing up to 10 O'clock position and finish with 10 O'clock position) ... PGA Tour pros employ this technique when there is a strong head wind ...
Watch how J Rose did a knockdown shot ... Very well explained ...

if your ball not rolling to flag then why not just use a longer iron to stop near the flag (without rolling)?

I can tell you that it's not a problem, most people would like your 'problem' in their game. Keep up the good work!

Bro,
Not running enough (3 foot roll) for ur short irons is good problem which all golfers hope to achieve.
I wish I can constantly put them within 3foot roll for my irons. Like what the other brothers advice, play with a longer club for that longer pin.

You may want to use a hard 2-piece ball with less spin. Soft feel balls should not be used if you want roll.

Thank you for the encourgements GRian brothers! Sometimes back pin will wish that it rolls to the flag for safety. Not very comfortable to trying to hit all the way to the end in case it flies out to the back. I was always wondering how the PGA pros can control the ball to roll to stop or to roll back.

3 feet is acceptable roll for 9 iron
our fellow GRian MC usually backspin a 9 iron

I agree with most of the guys here, having your iron stop with little roll or backspin is a good thing, not a problem.
However, appreciating the situation you mentioned, the easiest way to get more roll would be to take more club and make a smaller swing. e.g. 5 iron instead of 7 iron, swing 50-60%. Please practice at range to fine tune ball placement, tempo and general "feel" of the swing then try it a few times on the course. For all you know, direction and contact might improve as well.
Have fun!

Bro, if you want roll, you should using woods. Iron shots aren't suppose to roll.....in fact, it should back-roll

Bro turbo is exactly right. Put it back in your stance, easy swing with a longer club.
