How do you know if you are suitable for steel shaft? i know that many out there are using steel shaft, but also got many are still on graphite..

Would want to know how much would it cost to reshaft an iron, let say NS pro950? or True Temper?..

Thanks

All boils down to visiting a club fitter. They'll measure your swingspeed etc to determine what sort of shaft flex is suitable for you. As for the cost of reshafting, that depends on the shaft you want to use etc.

I am not really sure about the prices as i do not reshaft that often. but you can look at $40 to $100 range per shaft.

in todays technology, graphite and steel are almost similar. aerotech has made their own graphite shaft to be almost as stable as steel shafts. TT has made some steel shafts that are even lighter than some graphite shafts out there.

Over the past 10 years, have tried various kinds of shaft but at the end of the day it depends on what U are looking for. For Steel, NS Pro generally lighter and launches the ball higher than the DGs or Rifles but costs a bit more. Because graphite are lighter, to keep the club balanced, graphite a generally longer in length. Bottom line - no pt thinking about rehafting if you swing is still evolving. If u are beginner, NS pro will be a safer bet.

i would not say that Nippon Steel is cheapo. that is abit degrading.

just that each brand have their different specific specifications and characteristics... like sometime how u want VTEC power or you want the power of the in-line 6....

you just got to find one that suits u and of course... your budget...

Folks,

Would like to ask some opinions, I have a Nakashima Nx-1 with DGSL 300R and Mizuno MP57 with NS950H, both regular. I am losing abt 1 club length distance with MP57 even though both have the same loft although different clubs.

Is this a sign that I am not suited for NS950H?

Does the weight of the head also makes a difference?

Think this got to go back to the shaft weight issue. There a discussion on this topic few days ago.

It's too chim for me

I have also have a MFl-Hi 4i reshafted in TX Tour Stiff. Initially, I had problem playing it and after messing around with it, I convince fitter to cut 1/2 in of it, now it is my go to club.

Driving me mad... I cant believe it I went short all most every hole.

NS Pro is NOT a cheap shaft. It tends to be popular with JDM sets partly due to the lightness of some of the shafts, e.g. 950GH series.

A shaft can be too heavy or too light with a specific clubhead, depending on the speed, angle of attack and other factors of a person's swing. What works for me (KBS) may not work for other people. For example, assuming my swing speed remains constant, a KBS Tour 90 shaft may work well on my KZG Forged Z0 heads (relatively light) but may be a bad choice for my Cleveland CG1 Black Pearl heads (which are relatively heavier) and an even worse choice for my tour TM RAC MBs (which are significantly heavier than the average headweight).

In the end, it is advisable for the OP to see a certified/accredited fitter, and get fitted on a launch monitor to see which results are more desirable for a specific clubhead and swing characteristic.

I've not been taking custom fitting seriously until recently when I gave up band-aiding my swing with some fix or other and got properly fitted, and as a result, my scores are more stable, with improvements in accuracy and an acceptable loss in distance of a clublength

Fitting is not something you guess, and people who do so eventually realize they end up spending more money going through shafts than getting it right once and for all.

Tweaks cost money, and more importantly, the wrong tweaks can have a negative effect on one's swing, which will introduce more grief down the road. Razz

hmmm i also have this dilemma. my swing's still evolving and not very consistent (not to mention my problems with the longer irons) but i feel my mx200s with dynalite gold r300 113g is a little too heavy for me and i'm thinking maybe i'm not strong enough to create the swing speed to get the balls from my longer irons up in the air. so do i spend the money to get fitted (which costs money and my swing's not up to standard) or stick with what i have and try to improve on that? (which might ingrain undesirable things into my swing or even stunt my rate of improvement)

Here's something that happened to me in the last year:

I got a driver in S flex that I played pretty okay with but was not getting the distance I sought. So I bought another driver with R flex shaft that gave me the distance I wanted and was reasonably accurate.

Then I went to get fitted at GH in Dubai Mall, and the fitter refused to do the work. Insisted that I fix my swing first. I was like, "WTF, I'm paying you to custom fit me and you're turning me down?". Fine, so I worked with him and he sorted out my swing mechanics, which I later learned was preventing me from getting the speed I should be getting -- poor lag, inconsistent swing plane, poor impact, etc

Fast forward 2 months later, I was swinging much more smoothly, with better tempo, generating clubhead speeds as high as 90+ mph on 7i. Today, my driver swing speed at 75% is around 105 mph -- compared to 4 months ago when it wouldn't even reach 85 mph

I wasted my money on the R-flex driver, which I thought was a fix, when I should have gone for proper lessons in the first place.

I think you may be facing 2 kinds of problems at the moment -- club MAY be too heavy for you, but the swing mechanics problem is a higher likelihood. I'm not sure how strong you are, but I would say that as a beginner-friendly club, it might feel heavy because you may still be utilizing your small muscles (arms) instead of the bigger ones (shoulder, torso, hip) in the backswing.

My suggestion -- see a coach and a fitter independently and see what they say. Don't take my word for gospel, I'm just sharing my experience. In the end, I wish I got my swing fixed years ago instead of trying to use equipment to compensate for swing faults

damn i was hoping you wouldn't say that! i need something to legitimise my golf equipment addiction! hahaha but you're right i do need proper lessons (considering i've never even been to one and i've been self taught the past year plus) and you saying my arm muscles small ah! hahaha kidding lah. but thanks for the very enlightening anecdote ghoonk. it's nice to know a noob, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed on the path to golf superstardom (i wish) has a place to turn to for help. I was self-taught too. That led to self-suffering, self-fix, and self-spend. Sad

I like to hijack this thread to ask a related question.

I am trying to relate the flex and the weight of the shaft.

My swing speed is not fast and not smooth yet but somehow I find heavier shaft easier to control and shots dispersion is better (currently using NS Pro 950 on MX25)... one clubfitter suggested I change to heavier shaft... I still thinking about it.... any comments?

perhaps you can try out the different shafts with your current iron heads? the trackman would also be a good guide.

have not try re-shafting before.... won't that be a expensive trial?... buy new shaft and try?
