| it is not surprising that there is a divergence in views here - essentially between the newbie and the seasoned golfer.
as much as our golf game evolves and (hopefully) improves over time, so does our attitude and perception of the rules and etiquette. as much as we want newbies to start off with the right attitude, it is easier said than done, especially since they are the ones having to face drives that trickle to the rough, lost balls etc more so than seasoned golfers
when it comes to the newbie who is struggling with his game, sometimes all it takes is a bit of commonsense to decide whether to take a mulligan, or to drop a ball in front. my view is that as long as your decision does not affect other golfers, esp those in the flight behind, as well as your own flight mates (i have manyatimes wanted to strangle the fllightmate who takes forever to make his lostcountbogey putt), then go ahead and take your time to practise on the course.

I agree absolutely ... Especially for newbie ... So that they will take every shot seriously ... If not, one would never learn ...

| i am with scotty on this. so seriously until they take 3 to infinity practise swings. then tense up and still duff the ball.
After which they go buy a stroke counter to remind themselves to seriously count their strokes to death.
Actually, better to not count strokes when you need a stroke counter . Just enjoy the walk, and work on the game that is actually workable on the greens, namely, the chip and putts. Play quickly but safely and not hold up the game is more important.

Speaking of stroke counter, when I took my cr back then one guy was using it, kenna f by the tester, he said "cannot even count 1-10, I old man can count, young man like u cannot count".

To me that is not classified as being serious ... It is more like he/she lacking in confidence, kia su or kan cheon ... In my context of taking the game seriously, every stroke counts and one cannot assume he/she can replay the shot without penalty if he makes mistake ... And one must try to follow the golf rules and inculcate the good habit ... I have seen newbie improving his lie when his ball landed in the rough or when his ball landed infront of a tree, he moved his ball to a playable area without taking a two-club length penalty drop from where the ball landed ... This is what I called not taking the game seriously ...

| How about this, SAFRA members, with players of back flight breathing down your neck, add 2 stroke (one for distance, another for penalty) drop a ball then you are hitting 4 th stroke. So what U want? Pick up the ball then drive all the way back to tee box to hit the 3 rd shot?? U might OB again!!!!! Recommend to hit a pro ball which U must declare so that U cannot go there and claim that your first ball is still in play. TDO > most people forgotten to "add" 2 and usually declare they hit 3rd stroke.
Usually ppl having hit into hazard, if there is no marker, all hell break loose. ball into water> got splash, oso problem, yellow stick and red stick, dont know how to take advantage. point of entry. if ball hit slop/collar of green and roll into pond/water, drop where?? no drop zone, big argument. When U cannot find a ball at the hazard/bush/ even flower bed, that is consider "lost " ball. actual flower bed free drop. can identify than 1 stroke penalty else 2 . (1 for distance& penalty)
with so much rules and regulation, if it is a social game, then u can decide (or check once honesty) would U play another game with tat person. IF some $$ is involved then, follow him or her every shot. remind tat ppl what he is doing. Bring the R&A book. call the marshal n oso bring rules official NOw U know why they play Mafia rules???? AS IS N WHERE IS if you move the ball or drop, U lost the hole or game go enjoy the outing,
