Beginner here

Hi all,

I'm interested to pick up golf but not sure where to go. I'm considering the beginner course at Bishan range by modelpro.

I wonder if I need to get equipment right away, if so which club to get?

i'm quite a newbie as well. started learning a yr or so ago.

a lot is really up to the individual, but i found it useful to have my own clubs when learning, since it enables you to go to the range and practise anytime you wanna (and gives you the chance to get used to the clubs). also, since i was just learning at the time, i bought a cheap old set from a friend (didnt make sense to buy something expensive, especially when one's just starting out and unsure what clubs will suit).

but of course, the above presupposes that you're quite set on picking up golf. if you just wanna give it a try and may not continue, then you might wanna hold off buying clubs for now...

also, when you're learning, the clubs which are most likely to be used are a 7-iron, a wedge, a 5-wood and a putter (at least based on my own experience).

lastly, have fun learning!

if I don't get a set myself, the golf lesson will come with them?

depends on the coach and place you learn at. quite often, i think they will have old/spare clubs for you to use during the lessons. but best for you to check and confirm this with the place you wanna learn at.

Make a commitment...it's a good habit in golf.
There are many decent sets being sold off here in GR that you can get for yourself. It's actually quite worth it... Do consider.

Actually I just quit my job and want to pick it up hopefully within a month (is that possible)?

Are there any good places to learn and be ready to go on the green?

about your question about whether possible to pick up golf in a month, really depends on what you mean by pick up golf. if you mean just learn the basic stuff, i guess possible if you go for quite a lot of lessons within that month (subject to the coach's schedule of course).

but if you mean get your handicap within a month, i think that's pretty much impossible (cuz this will probably mean you have to have a lesson nearly every single day, learn the basis very quickly, get your PC, play the required 5 games (and get the scorecards), then go for the courtesy round, all within a month, and this would be crazy expensive i think).

i did my courtesy round with a teaching pro recently. nice guy and very helpful. he's a coach at fairway club. if you want, can give him a call to ask for more info about lessons and what's required to get your handicap. jeffrey: 9327 3972

If you are serious into this game, get a decent set, Because when you go for lesson you'll be using that set at least until you get your hcp then you can consider upgrading if you want.

So do you guys think TM R11 or R1 driver is suitable for a beginner? I'm considering one of these. Thanks for any input/advise.

I'd say the adjustability featured in the drivers is a boon for beginners as it'll allow them to try the various combinations and see how it affects their ball flight. Go for it !

damage really depends on brand, model and condition. and check out the GR marketplace forum. usually quite a few good deals can be found...

but i'm too much of a newbie to advise on what clubs will be suitable, so cant help there. heh...

i'd say it would be better if you could go to the various demos held by the different brands to try them out. That would give you a much better idea of what suits you. Do take notes and compare amongst different brands, types etc. Discard worst and best hits, and consider the average of all the shots. This ought to give you a good idea of the dispersion etc and should point you towards something more suitable for yourself.

get iron 1st.....then maybe a putter if you going to play in any executive courses. Then last is the big stick.

I will buy wedges, follow by irons, then a putter and lastly are the long sticks like fairway wood, hybrids and driver. At least, this is the way my friend got me addicted to golf.

500 to 800 is a good budget. 300 for irons, 150 for wedges and 150 for putter?

Lol thanks Enwee. I got a callaway x 20 irons set from 4 to pw. Was my first set its really forgiving and easy to hit. Can pm you if you want more details
