| Where I live, it could be children kidnapped, spouse in accidents, etc. Some call me in the middle of the night, a girl crying at the other end claiming she'd been arrested and a man grabbed the phone and said my daughter has been arrested for illegal drug possession.
I got no child. So I told the guy to beat her up to death coz I am making another one...
Another time, someone called my Dad claiming to be a cop. was told to switch off his phone because some drug dealer is using his cell phone illegally and Police are sweeping the area. At the same time, the guy called my Mom and told her my Dad got an accident.
It so happened that my Mom was teeing up with my Dad...
As Bill Gates said: trust, but verify...

| My personal experience is someone called me claiming to to be a CID detective. He say I am involved in some drug deal. I ask him is he in his office. He said yes and I told him I am at the CID office now but I don't see him. He just hung up :p | |

| Hi...in the first place, i think we should not call it a 'prank' call, as stated by some and also my own experience, it is a common SCAM.
For me, this happened about 3 yrs ago. I just started work at JB, first week. My Mom got a call from someone who claimed that he had kidnapped me in JB. My Mom got a shock since it was soooo coincindental. They asked her not to hang up (so she cannot call to verify), and demanded her to TT money immediately.
Lucky for us, we are poor ppl so got no money in the bank. So, she pleaded and said no money.. the guy no choice hang up.
It was only later, after she called my dad, and Dad called me. I was chilling in my new office, then they realize that they were almost scammed. I scolded my mom for being so naive, but can't really blame her right?
I think these guys have perfected their operation and have insiders either with phone company and/or immigration. In my opinion, their success rate must be damn good. I'm sure many many cases go unreported...

| Well, this made its way to the front "page" (more like the cover) of the Today newspaper. | |

| There was another incident happened in HK Disneyland, the father went to buy drinks so walked away, the mum n 2 kids sat at the bench. a kidnapper forcibly snatched one of the child, lost amd flustered by the sudden attack. not knowing what to do, a lady whom sat nearby told her to quickly go after the kidnapper, she can help to look after the other child. she took the advice and gave chased. The worst is cant find the kidnapper, the 2nd kid also went missing. Heart wrench upon hearing such story. all bros and sis to take note during travel. always stay in a pack, no matter how small it may seems. | |

| Also like to share n raise awareness on how the scammers got all your info They normally got it by calling you for survey, asking details such as no of family members etc... The actual spam call will happen later, which is why they are able to sound so genuine to the old folks. | |

| Just wish to share my true story here.
I think about 3 to 4 years back i was hospitalize for quite a period of time at SGH. My mom received a call saying i got kipnap from the hospital. they managed somehow getting someone to imitate my voice and somehow that person knows how i address my mom. similarly my mom was not able to hang up, kept on the phone and cant ring anyone, she was asked to go to outrum park to make a transfer of the quite some money to an account i think is in china. The lucky thing was that i was in SGH and she called my mobile and she got a shock that i am still in SGH. she rush to SGH where she broke down and cry, i managed to get my sister who was working in CBD at that time to immediately stop the transfer and a police report was made. lucky for us. we were able to recover the money. Do take care of such scam its real!
