Ah Long - Loan Sharks

Hi,

Some of my overseas friends have asked me about the reason we call loan sharks is Singapore Ah Long.

Honestly, I have no idea.

Anyone knows and share with us ?

Guess you are not cantonese...comes from the phrase "tai yee long".

Derive from cantonese 大耳窿, Dai Yi Long
Meaning loanshark
So in short become Ah Long

But why cal tai yee long leh?

I know it is called 大耳窿, Dai Yi Long in Cantonese or Chinese.

Any reason to call them with this term.

In the past when mata wear shorts and $0.05 bigger than cow cart wheel.
Ah Long use to put $(ala coins) in ear, if both of you old enuff to remember.

After prolong putting coin in ear, ear hole become bigger.
If you wanted to borrow money in the past, you look for the big ear hole gent.
So loan shark became known as 大耳窿

Yes. This was what I was told also. Remembered seeing pple do that when I was young.

I'm new to Singapore - I've got a singtel pre-paid SIM.

I get about 3 or 4 calls a day with Chinese guys offering student loans to me!!! Where the hell did they get my number from???? And why are they offering me student loans I'm a 33yr old Golf Professional.....haha

It's a bit annoying now......

Next time I'll give it the Liam Neeson treatment from the movie Taken see if I can get a reaction:

Most likely your number is some recycled number.

Recycled or cold calls from them.

More will come after a period of time.

Loans, insurance, credit card, etc will be the main calls from their mkting agency.

Either tell them nicely that you will call then if there is a need or just inform them that you are unemployed or a househusband with no income and play gold everyday

Tell me about it......!

This is what I actually did....if you ever get get such call again from, says "A", store his number. When you get call from "B", tell "B" that "A" is very interested and recommend B to call A.
