| Not many transfer record between these 2 rivals.
....
LONDON - FORMER Liverpool star striker and European Footballer of the Year Michael Owen has completed a surprise free transfer move to Manchester United, the Premier League champions said on Friday.
'Michael is a world class forward with a proven goalscoring record at the highest level and that has never been in question,' said manager Alex Ferguson.
'Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish,' he added on the club's official website (www.manutd.com).
Owen, 29, had been out of contract after deciding to leave relegated Newcastle United and becomes Alex Ferguson's second signing of the close-season following Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia's move from Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.
The ex-Liverpool striker has struggled for form and fitness in four years at Newcastle, scoring just 30 goals, and has been consistently overlooked by England manager Fabio Capello.
Owen, seventh on the list of all-time top scorers in the Premier League with 144, had been linked by British media with a move to Hull City last week but will instead replace Argentina forward Carlos Tevez who left United last month.
'I had just begun to talk to other clubs when out of the blue Sir Alex phoned me on Wednesday afternoon, invited me to have breakfast with him next morning during which he told me that he wanted to sign me,' Owen said. 'I agreed without a moment's thought.'
Owen will be reunited with striker Wayne Rooney whom he successfully partnered in attack for England before injuries curtailed his international career.
'I am now looking forward to being a Manchester United player and I am fortunate that I already know so many of the players here,' Owen added. -- REUTERS

| Please loh...
Even if Owen wants to go back to Liverpool, nobody wants him back. He now has a chance to continue playing in the top teams in EPL. Why not?
Man U also desperate to find replacement. All their players all getting on in their years. Giggs, Scholes, Neville and gang need to focus on other things. Hardworking Tevez and Pretty Ronnie has left so Fergie is desperately looking for players. He will probably take anyone that comes along... so here's Owen.
But my 2 cents.... Owen won't perform. His playing style is different. Eventually become Andy Cole II.

....DS I second this comment. You can go elsewhere but to Man U absolute No No. I think Fergie's game plan for 2010 is likely to feature more new young players with seniors. He has taken quite fair amount of risks for 2009. With Owen, I am not too sure. Will see how this goes. So long as it is not another gambler i.e. rooney, I think it will be better.

| yes, MO is a risk, but at what cost, pretty sure his contract is incentive-based, it cost no pounds and pence, think its a good move by SAF......
ManU has about 70 games across 4 trophies, pretty sure rooney n berbetov will be starters for the important ones, think MO will only start against lesser team, carling or even FA cup, to compete in that many games, SAF knows he needs 4 forwards, MO will play n can be mentor to both wellbarn n mecheda....... if its championship manager, i will sign MO too
traitor is a strong word...... if Liverpool really wants MO, why sell him to real madriad in the first place, i dun see Pool selling SG....... love cuts both ways, MO should do what is good for him, dun want to see him end up like robbie fowler

| Liverpool abandon Owen long time ago. Its not as if he left at the peak of his career. Think its a low risk signing (Owen is at least better than Saha) and probably brought in to give Rooney some familiar help, help which had some success in the past. Dont think Rooney and Berbatov is a good pairing. This is more a signing for Rooney integration as main striker than its is for MO goal scoring prowess | |
