| I arrived in Singapore on Oct 1 and still haven't played golf. I'm so itching to play but my golf clubs are slower in arriving than me. So it's Saturday afternoon and I'm just sitting here reading this great forum.

| I'm from Canada and here for good. I don't know anyone except my girlfriend but she doesn't play golf. So I would like to make some golf friends. | |

Welcome..... Thanks, I will look into it. But what confuses me is how hard it is to get on a course in Singapore. Do I really need a handicap? Why different prices for different people? I don't have a PR yet. Sounds so complicated just to play a game. EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I will do what I have to do. | |

| Welcome to Singapore! To start, some acronyms you will be seeing (in no particular order) to save you time and confusion: FESC: Far East Shopping Centre. On Orchard Rd, probably the largest concentration of golf shops in one place. New and used equipment. Good prices on golf clothes if your Canada gear is to heavy for our weather. MGK: My Golf Kaki. Popular "estateless" golf club that maintains your handicap. There are others and the full list can be found on the SGA (Singapore Golf Association) website. PC: Proficiency Certificate. A "learners permit" for golf. Unique to Singapore. It "certifies" that you are good enough to not be a danger to others or a threat to the pace of play. Typically you can only use it to play at the course that issued it. CR: Courtesy Round. The last step before you are issued a handicap. Basically you play 9 holes with a guy or gal whose job it is to confirm you can play golf and your ability is in line with the score cards you are submitting for your handicap. You will also see acronyms for the golf courses here. MBGC (Marina Bay), NSRCC (National Service Resort and Country Club), LNGCC (Laguna). If you just want to play you can go to the executive/Par 3 courses like Tanglin. You could go there right now, pay your $30, and go. MBGC is the only public 18 hole course here. You can play without proof of a handicap, but they will ask you to do a swing test before they let you on the course. If you are going to here for a while, get a handicap. It will make life easier, give you more options for places to play, and make it easy for any club member friends to invite you out for round. Probably the quickest way if you already know how to play is get your PC with MGK Tanglin or Star Golf Academy MBGC. With that PC, you can play at MBGC and OCC (sorry Orchid Country Club ) with some restrictions. Collect five 18 hole scorecards within a year, and then do your CR. I'm not an expert on this stuff, but that is info I picked up in past three months as I learn golf in the Republic. Hope it helps! | hey Elephant789 welcome welcome welcome to the Republic... wishing u lots of golf in this part of the world... most courses in Singapore requires a PC or HCP whereas in JB (Johor Bahru) north of us, most courses dun really check for HCPs cept for a few places so long as u can hit the ball and keep to a decent time per 18-hole round | |
