my is lazy to swing....
i seem to be able to hit, longer at night or at least after 5pm though... i suspect its my body flexibility that seems to increase dramatically for reasons unknown after 5pm

| I have heard, but never verified, that to optimise the distance of any particular club, but more so those with lower lofts, requires a minimum ball speed.
Some things I have read or heard
1) Golfers with a slower swing speed would get more overall distance from a higher lofted driver, e.g. 13deg as compared to a 9.5deg
2) if you do not have a driver swing speed above 95mph, a 5 wood will produce more distance for you than a 3 wood
3) Unless you have a driver swing speed in excess of 100mph, you are not going to see much distance difference in distance between modern loft 3,4 and 5 irons, even with decent contact.
Any truth in these comments?
Would any qualified individual be able to confirm/elaborate in this?

| someone should start the "how far you hit your lob wedge?" thread soon. at his rate, club manufacturers should be selling 7 i to 65 degree wedge.....unless golf courses get longer.
no offense but Sham does hits his 5 iron to the 180 mark with a half swing and i have also teased him about his need to carry his 4 to 6 iron.
Derek..

- as a rule of thumb, yes but those info was written before the advent of launch monitor which gave us a different point of view and opportunity to really fit a golfer.
A lot depends on the golfer's AOA and preference at address. in reality we all adjust to what we put in front of us. countless swing test have shown that proficient golfers can adapt very fast without making a conscious effort. for someone who swings at 100 mph with say a - 5 degree angle of attack, a X stiff shaft with a 13 degree driver WILL work better than a 9.5 (if ego permits). now if a golfer with 85 mph driver speed and a +5 degree AOA fitted with 8.5 degree and a A flex will perform better than a 13 degree with the same flex. it all depends on how the fitter explains and work with the golfer. i have recently fitted a golfer with a 100 mph swing with a 11.5 degree Razr Fit. it turns out that his brother runs the Asian Tour.
2) if you do not have a driver swing speed above 95mph, a 5 wood will produce more distance for you than a 3 wood
it all boils down to percentage and confidence. scientifically, when there is a difference in length, loft and weight, the heavier or longer club with less loft should produce longer distance. in reality it boils down to confidence and ease of use. lastly today's 5 wood is yesterdays 3 wood loft.
3) Unless you have a driver swing speed in excess of 100mph, you are not going to see much distance difference in distance between modern loft 3,4 and 5 irons, even with decent contact.
same as #2 unless its bad knockoffs. most of the bad fakes uses the same mould for 3 to 5 so the loft are the same and only the numbering on the sole differs.
hope it helps......DGman

| DGman, silly question for you:
All things being equal, would a lighter shaft (for irons) give a golfer more distance? I expect that there may be a loss in accuracy but I wonder if a lighter shaft allows the golfer to whip the ball better.

| for the whipping part.......better ask Pak Slicer cos he has the book that prove that there is no such thing as a whip.
unless your hand position do not change like placing your driver on a vice clamp, the "whip" is only a feel preference for no more than 2 to 3 inch of lag between the butt and the tip of the shaft. anything more than that, the shaft would have broken.
weight is preference. please see other thread on total weight. and the lighter the shaft means the faster you have to swing not can swing to achieve the same distance.
hope it helps.......DGman
i thought the thread is on how far you can hit your 5 iron. do not wish to sidetrack otherwise thread starter may get pissed. sorry andrew

| Thanks, DGman. So, I'm wondering whether in relation to using a lighter shaft for my 5i, would I gain more distance? Ok, OT... | |

Ok, OT... I just make the life changing decision to go lighter......big part of the decision was by the fool-golfer.......using the law of A=F/M.....he convinced me that lighter will generate more speed 27th Oct during the monthly game.....you can verify hor......

| 5-iron should go roughly 10m more than your 6-iron ... If it does and you are not happy with the distance your problems are much bigger than simply reshafting the 5 iron | |
