Hello GRians,

Ihave a big problem.

I can hit my irons and rescue without any problem in driving range. I can get the distance and direction that I want.

But when it comes to green, I just suck! Hitting the ground most of the time. A big patch of grass will fly together with the ball.

What can I do?

The experience is different. Much like the use of one's right hand.

They too, like golf, have their own equipment and similar challenges.

samurai, place a cigarette butt 2 cm in front of the ball nearer to the target.

Then you look at the ciggy and hit the ciggy. Not the ball

If you can get the ciggy to fly, then you may have solved the problem.

Nutty, learn self taught also can go far, just like YE Yang Wink

So you have to smoke first before you swing? I like....

To share something from my own journey, I strongly believe that at some point, a golfer will have to begin to practice on a surface that is less forgiving than a range mat. It does not always need to be pristine cropped Bermuda or Paspalum (e.g Sentosa), as long as it is a natural surface, be it cow grass, sand, etc

I was lucky enough that JCC was only 5 mins drive from my workplace when I first picked up golf, so instead of facing the rush hour jam, I would head to JCC every evening to practice at the range or play on the executive course there (I was also single then, so had all the time in the world). The great thing about JCC range (lower level on the left) is that there is something like a fairway bunker that stretches across about 10 bays. Striking a ball cleanly off the sand is pretty demanding and a real test of your ball striking.

Another place I would go to would be turf city, it's cow grass and not very even, but if you can hit off that type of crap, a fairway on a golf course will be a piece of cake.

A word of caution though, making the move too soon can be extremely frustrating and may put you off golf, something which happened to a friend of mine. So if your first experience is not good, don't worry, head back to the range, check back with a golf pro if necessary, and head back again.

At the initial stages, what helped me out was using a short tee, such that the ball sits just slightly off the ground. Initially a fair bit then progressively closer to the ground. Sort of like placing the ball on a short rubber tee at the driving range when absolute beginners have their first few lessons.

Keep at it and don't give up, golf is a journey so be patient and enjoy the learning experiences along the way!

Anyone who has the same problem should try to emulate this technique!

Well at least it worked for me.

Yesterday night, I went to JGCC driving range and there was not so many people. So decided to hit from the grass in front of the mat. I am so pleased with the results. I had an 80% success rate. I will try again today and hopefully can achieve a better result.

Hi all ... I used to have this problem as well. At the range mat hit like a pro then on proper course u start topping the ball and all kinda bad shot you can think about. Then a friend of mine thought me a drill .. just simply put a tee or somthing rather flat like a matchstick 5 inches after the ball. The idea is to hit the ball first then your clubhead sweep thru the tee or the matchstick which is 5 inches away after the ball launches into the air, therefore creating a divot when you actually hitting it off the turf. Hope it helps ya.

Hey Guys...

There is a Grass Range at Turf City... i'm actually working here at the Champions Golf Academy Grass Range (South End). We are open every day...

On another note... pick up October issue of Golf at the driving range about this topic.

Cheers

Yes, your hearsay is correct but they didn't tell you it is for 9 holes only.
