Clarke embraces new fitness regime

Darren Clarke has bitten the bullet and begun working with Belfast-based fitness expert Jonny Bloomfield ahead of the new season.



The Open champion claims he is now a "lean, mean, fighting machine", and is raring to go ahead of his first tournament of the year, this week's Volvo Golf Champions in South Africa.


Clarke has been off the booze and in the gym since the end of the Christmas festivities in a bid to turn around the disappointing end to what was still the best season of his life.


Following his Open win at Sandwich in July of last year, the last five months of 2011 were a bit of a letdown for the 43-year-old Northern Irishman and he does not want the same to be true of 2012.


"My golf career has been extended somewhat by winning the Open Championship and I just thought that enough is enough and it was time to get myself into better shape," he said.
