In comparison, the sanctioned CIMB Malaysia event which is being held at the same time contains a much less compelling field, compared to last year and compared to Shanghai. I can hardly drag my lazy butt to go watch it this year. That's me. Imagine the less fanatical golfing public.

@ Bro Lee....I am the opposite of you le..I get damm excited watching any tourney....even the Iskandar johor when they last played at Royal Johor...I was very excited.

I even tried to watch an amateur tourney...and tried convincing the club that they should let me and my 9 yr son watch...but they said " no member..no watchin !!! '...

Iskandar Johor Open is a real tournament on the Asian Tour circuit. Asian Tour pros will fight it out for prize money and ranking points, so perhaps it makes the event more compelling. This CIMB thing is like a vacation golf trip for the PGA guys, also can make a few bucks. No need to worry about hami Vegas stakes and baby milk powder money...

It's unfortunate that public was not allowed to watch the amateur tournament. Dunno what else to say...

Bro Duval,

Then you are a more passionate fan than I, puts me to shame a bit.

It's just that last year, we had Adam Scott, YE Yang, Rickie Fowler, Retief Goosen, Ernie Els, Luke Donald, Tim Clark, to name just a few household names, all of whom are not in the field this year. I was like a tourist in Hollywood, wondering which golfing star I would cross paths with next. It was magical, and I got a bit spoilt.

This year, at least we have new additions like Jonathan Vegas, Angle Cabrera and Vijay Singh, but the field has thinned out considerably. I guess having another star-studded event in China, funded by private money, doesn't help.

As we know, with money, many things are possible. And China has lots of money nowadays. And touring pros are certainly not going to argue with that when they cash their appearance fee checks.

The free market (an ironic term to use with China) tends to produce the most efficient economic solution, politics not withstanding.

Whew! Thanks bro. I'm glad I'm not the only one; I thought I was dense or something...I read and read, how come I couldn't get it?

I think Kyi Hla Han's trying to rope in China PGA into the Asian Tour. But seems like China's not interested. My guess is the prize money on Asian Tour is not enticing enough

OneAsia also wants China to be part of their circuit.

Everyone sees big money coming out from our ancestral homeland... it's all a case of SHOW ME THE MONEY!!

Key points in the article:

  • China is jeopardising the development of its golfing talent with cash-rich "vanity" exhibition tournaments, the head of the Asian Tour has warned.

  • "These exhibition events are just short term situations making the rich players richer, and they are all non-Asian players. In a way these tournaments are vanity projects by the organisers and sponsors."

  • The PGA are reported as also being unhappy with the events offering record breaking amounts of cash to attract its top tour players.

So.... just wondering out loud,

What's stopping the official governing body from organising a sanctioned tournament in China on the same scale if not grander?

And...

If intent is to 'court' China's tournament into its fold, issuing a confrontational press statement, sounding 'warning', claiming it is detrimental to the development of local talent, threatening 'we may take action in the future' etc. seems to be a counter-productive way to go about it.

It would be safe to assume the 2012 HSBC Shanghai event won't be cancelled because of this 'warning.'

And... consider this.

============================

Luke Donald is questioning the PGA Tour’s decision to delay the voting for its Player of the Year Award.

Ballot papers were expected to be sent out to PGA Tour players this week, but the voting process has been pushed back by two weeks to enable the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai to be completed first.

However, PGA Tour Executive Vice President of Communications and International Affairs Ty Votaw insisted there was nothing sinister in the move to include the event in China.

Votaw revealed that the change was decided upon after a member of the media enquired as to whether the Shanghai tournament was still an official PGA Tour victory. Votaw explained that while it does not count toward the official money list, it is still considered an official win in every other sense.

"If this change wasn't made, you could have had members voting on incomplete information if they voted before HSBC," Votaw declared. "It came down to a question of fairness.

============================

How is it that an unsanctioned, 'detrimental to local talent development, cash-rich vanity tournament' can be counted as 'an official win in every other sense' in the PGA Player of the Year vote?

So, recognized or not recognized? Inconsistent stand. scratch
