Ho bros here, need some advise.

After seeing all your wedges sets, I feel like getting myself a complete set of wedges too.

I'm currently using a TM RAC Chrome 56Deg Wedge which I got from GN HarbourFront before it closed down... Now I hope to find the same model but 52Deg to all to my set...

My question, where can I get it? Is this model phased out???

hijacking this topic! haha

i'm wondering which finishes you prefer on your wedges and why? heard that black nickel and the oil can finish wears off to leave a raw wedge that'll supposedly give more bite but i'm not sure about how i like the look of it though.. chrome on the other hand looks pretty normal. haha a bit torn here.. Razz

I love black satin / black pearl wedges (which gives the gun metal look).

My CGs are black pearl and my 60˚ vokey is black satin.

I have a 56˚ vokey which is of normal color and it doesn't look quite as nice.

Yes, the black tint wears off after a while but I can't help but feel that the color is sleeker and more attractive Smile

Oil can finish looks nice too but I think it's harder to find many of such wedges (but I could be wrong).

PostSubject: Re: Wedges (Not the potato kind)   Wedges (Not the potato kind) - Page 2 I_icon_minitimeMon Sep 21, 2009 10:41 am

my MX25 set came with
PW: 46deg, bounce6
GW: 51deg, bounce7
SW: 56deg, bounce13
MP-R: 60 Deg, bounce8

I got some beginner questions about how to maximise the use of different wedges.
1. Besides distance and lie, how do you decide which wedge to use? e.g. say i can reach the same carry distance with half swing of a SW and quarter swing of a GW. I can't really see much difference with the roll. I heard some guys just use 1x52 wedge and varied the distance by the amount of swing and only use the SW in bunker due to bounce.

2. I find it very difficult to use the 60deg as either I will either slice it or occassionally top it and it fly to the other side of the green. Do you guys close the club when you use it?

I only realise recently the best way to cut down strokes is short game (what a relevation, haha Very Happy ) so really interested in answers about wedges now. Really frustrating Mad to use 2-3strokes to get on green within 100m and another 3strokes on putting....haha

PostSubject: Re: Wedges (Not the potato kind)   Wedges (Not the potato kind) - Page 2 I_icon_minitimeMon Sep 21, 2009 3:38 pm

Hi tksoh, welcome to GR.

As for your questions ...

1. When it comes to wedges, a lot of golfers will depend on feel rather than specs to choose which wedge to use for what distance. Rather, one will take into consideration the distance, how high to fly the ball, how far to carry, how much roll after landing, etc. to determine which wedge & what shot to play, i.e. play the ball forward in the stance, or closer to the back leg for a lower shot. So if you can reach a particular distance with both SW & GW, you should then choose the shot you are most comfortable with. And you are right about some players only use 1 wedge & vary the swing for diff distance. However, some would prefer to use the same swing, but with diff wedge to vary the distance.

2. Among all the wedges, the 60 deg would be the most difficult to use. And i am sure many experienced golfers still top the ball occasionally with this wedge. Since this wedge is already difficult to play with its natural loft, closing or opening the clubface actually exaggerates the difficulty level.

Hope the above will help a little.....

Just saw on tv last night Gaganjeet Bhullar top a pitch during the Macau Open. Lucky for him, the rough slowed down his ball and it ended rather close to the hole. His face damn paiseh Embarassed

think your "slice" is more of "shanking"... nothing to do with open club face... it's your swing that is causing the prob... keep the wedge until you are confident enough or your swing is more stable.
