how to have consistent swing of long irons?

I got difficulty to have consistent swing of 5 or longer irons. I am quite OK with the short and mid irons. Any pro can give some advice? Thanks a lot !!!!!!

i think long irons are all about tempo..
practice a smooth slightly shallower take-away and come down with medium tempo but focus on the front of the ball and ALWAYS finish the swing..
with practice, you should get there sooner..

Agree with TFP. Fluid...swing. You cannot rush the shot and try to beat the crap out of the ball. Start in the range by teeing it off with a short tee. Once you get use to the idea, then give it a try off the deck.

what is the longest club u hv other than driver? try using the longest to practise first.... nvm if u cannot hit... after a while, try ur long irons.... they will not look so long after that...

Hi Lionwoods,

Sometimes it just takes time and practice. I have been golfing for slightly more than 3 years and I only recently learnt how to strike the ball with a 6 iron consistently.

A couple of months ago, this great thread was posted. It helped me tremendously. I finally managed consistent contact with my 5 wood and I am hopeful that soon I will be able to use a 5 iron instead of a 5 hybrid.

Good luck and keep at it! Don't feel down over the clubs you can't hit, instead enjoy the feeling of the ones you can, knowing that you will figure out the rest one day.

Agree with tfp, its abt tempo n smooth swing.
How i started to be comfortable with my 3 n 4iron is, simply that.

U try startin with half or 3/4 swing 1st lor.
If cannot, then bathe n slp with ur irons.. Build rapport... Duno if it works... Keke

One way is to choke down on a fairway wood, roll the ball to the green, unless you need to carry over hazard and stop the ball.

I play my 3 or 4 iron like a fairway wood, except that I swing into the ball instead of sweeping through.

haha long irons are super hard to hit but the feeling when you get it right is unmatched by hitting a hybrid Smile

One of problems for the long iron are hitting the ground behind the ball. Recently practice more on the long iron. Realised one of the causes is wrong "swing plane". It is more difficult for long iron to maintain the same swing plane to have “inside – out” release. End up become a “top- down” swing then hit the ground.
Learnt from the bros in the driving range, need to point the end of club at left hand side to the ball during down swing.

Get a hybrid to replace. It is much easier to hit and misses cost much less strokes.

That's the most cost and time effective solution imo.

The longest iron I have in my bag is an 8 iron. Playing a 5 and 7 hybrid and I am not missing those mid and long irons.
