this is a question for the season/old birds :

i'm using cleveland CG15 56 degrees and a vokey sm4 52, last week did a game realize the skin off the balls seem to peel off .... So does wedge bite off the skin off the golf ball is it normal
ball in question was a couple of year old Precept D force and titleist NXT

during one of my lessons, i was told that in any competition the pro change ball after 1-3 holes.
the tremendous spin generated tear the skin off the ball!

It is the grooves from the club. Mostly from wedges. But also shorter irons can also shread the outer layer.

The new conforming grooves are shallower and cannot impart as much back spin as the older wedges. from my experience, the older vokeys are able shred the cover on the balls alot easier than the new conforming grooves clubs. then again, it could also mean i am not hitting the balls flush enough.
