Pro V1x loyalist Bubba Watson trusted a New Titleist Pro V1x golf ball in winning the Farmers Insurance Open Sunday at Torrey Pines, the same weekend the New Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls were officially introduced at the 2011 PGA Merchandise Show.
Watson got up-and-down from a greenside bunker on the par-5 18th hole on Torrey Pines' South Course, rolling in his New Titleist Pro V1x golf ball for birdie from 12 feet for a closing 5-under 67 and one-shot victory, the second in his last 12 starts on the PGA Tour.
It was a four-day display of both power and precision, as Watson led the field in both Driving Distance (316.6 yards) and Greens In Regulation (81.94 percent), making seven birdies, one eagle and just one bogey over his last 20 holes in sunny San Diego.
"What (the New Pro V1x has) been doing for me is a little bit higher ball flight... the same distance and same spin," Watson, 32, said earlier in the season. "I want it to go higher, you want it to be softer on the greens with these new grooves and the way it's been landing on these firm greens it's been able to stop a little quicker."
Watson was one of 102 players that trusted Titleist golf balls at Torrey Pines, more than six times the nearest competitor with 15 and more than all other competitors combined.
He was also one of 43 players that relied upon New Pro V1 or New Pro V1x golf balls, which will begin shipping to golf shops worldwide in February. The New Pro V1 and New Pro V1x golf balls were unveiled Thursday morning on the other side of the country at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla.
Three out of the first four events of the 2011 PGA Tour season have been won by Titleist golf ball loyalists, with 299 total players having teed up Titleist golf balls, nearly seven times the nearest competitor. Across the worldwide professional tours, 1,152 players have played Titleist golf balls, more than six times the nearest competitor and more than all other competitors combined.
Of the 12 players that finished among the top 10 and ties, seven trusted Titleist golf balls, including Titleist Brand Ambassador Nick Watney, who used a New Pro V1x to shoot a final-round 9-under 63 (and front-nine 28) and match the lowest score shot on the South Course since Rees Jones revamped the layout in preparation for the 2001 Open.
Titleist was also first in Iron Sets (41); Sand, Lob and Approach Wedges (136); and Putters (57).
