Hybrids or FW? Empty
PostSubject: Hybrids or FW?   Hybrids or FW? I_icon_minitimeThu Aug 26, 2010 1:11 pm

Decided to sell off my FW woods....

Thinking of replacing them with Hybrids but need advise on following:

a. Can hybrid replace FW in terms of playability?

b. In terms of distance - which is better?

c. Are the lofts sama sama?

d. If I do not use 4 and 5 iron, what is a suitable replacement?

e. What are the recommended hybrids to try/ buy?

Many thanks:P

Can I also ask everyone if there are advantages of changing normal sized grips to mid-size?

I kinda feel like I am "pinching" the grip than gripping it...so not sure if mid-size = ? size of gloves/ palms...

Thank you.

After last nite's SSN, i can wholeheartedly recommend the tm burner superfast hybrid. It is so easy to hit, with a nice penetrating launch angle, soft landing.

Best way to Answer to your grip question is to try them. I have a midsized grip on my irons with 5 wraps under. My glove size is 26. Larger grip reduces hands action. Come to ssn next week, you can test mine and see for yourself.

http://www.golfalot.com/Equipment/BuyingGuides.aspx

The above website should be able to answer some questions you have. Have a read through. The best is to always do research on the internet and also go and try the clubs yourself.

a. Can hybrid replace FW in terms of playability?

Yes it can. The invention of the hybrid is suppose to make it easier for recreational golfers use in comparison to FW. Having said that, I can't hit my G15 hybrid to save my life but other hybrids I have no problem. Also, I have a friend that has a Maruman 7W and i swear he hits it a mile.

b. In terms of distance - which is better?

All things being equal, distance is relative to loft. There are charts / stats out there that have a very very "generalised" data in regards to Loft & distance

c. Are the lofts sama sama?

eeerrmmm...Different manufacturers have different lofts for the same club.

EG: Cobra Baffler Rail 3H = 19*
Callaway FT 3H = 21*

d. If I do not use 4 and 5 iron, what is a suitable replacement?

Many will tell you it would be a Hybrid to replace it. BTW, I use my 5i for chip and run & for punching out the ball. Very effective. Many friends think I crazy but hey, it works well for me.

e. What are the recommended hybrids to try/ buy?

I would say that golf clubs are very individual. The most effective way is to go and try the clubs.

Bro Exigence, try to give your fw wood another chance, get a coach to relook your swing, its tough to hit off the deck but it's a definite beast of a weapon once you learn to tame it. A hybrid would not be able to give the same distance and carry. Just my few cents worth..
Cheers

a simple answer to your question on FW/hybrids....hybrids are easier to hit but are shorter than fairway woods...therefore, it's not an exact replacement distance wise....the number that you see on the hybrid, e.g.5H is meant to be the 5 iron replacement and not a replacement for your 5W....in short, hybrids are easier to hit than the long irons....

the current market leader in hybrids are the cobra baffler and taylor made rescue or raylor...of course you can't go wrong with the callaway hybrids as well...

The wood and hybrid may have the same loft but woods have longer shaft (TM 5 wood vs 3 hybrid both have 19 degrees loft but the 5 wood is a few inches longer...woods also have much higher SW).

FW and hybrids have their own functions... FW may seem a little harder to hit when we have sight issue with the downswing. "Golf Nut" said it all... get a coach to look at your swing. Personallay i love FW... Hybrids are simply there to replce our 3 and 4 irons mainly and will not go the distance FW can...

Just my thoughts...

Thanks for the sharing....

Cos I realised that the FW always end up "kiao tor" during play and does not connect with the ball....

And on top of this, my 5 iron is gone case...can't even get it right...maybe due to longer shaft and inconsistent swing.

Will try out the clubs and evaluate my options.....

BTW, what is SSN?

I tried to relate grip size to overall control of clubs...my hands are only glove size 22 but will perhaps try the recommendation and go for mid-size grips to prevent the "wobbling" in hands:)

thanks:)

Just to share...

I find that my 5 hybrid carry slightly less than 10m more than my 5 iron.. Perhaps it is easier to launch the ball higher...

So 5 hybrid becomes my 4i !!! Hybrids or FW? Icon_cyclops
Read a Golf Mag and it sure says that their trackman stats also shows that most of the hybrid goes a bit more distance that its equivalent iron... Hybrids or FW? Affraid

Really sound like too much right hand involved plus scared to miss... the more it misses. Either u experiment with more left hand involved or get a pro to explain to you. Can feel frustration in it.....
