Picking a driver & 3 wood shaft Empty
PostSubject: Picking a driver & 3 wood shaft   Picking a driver & 3 wood shaft I_icon_minitimeThu Jun 03, 2010 10:01 pm

Hi,

Wanted to tap the knowledge of the experts here.

I hear that the 3 wood shaft should be 5 to 10 grams heavier than the driver shaft, and ideally should have higher torque than the driver.

I'm having difficulty finding this mix - for example I find a driver shaft that I like, but can't find a 3 wood shaft I like that is 5 - 10 grams heavier and/or have a higher torque.

I know you guys will responds to say that I should go to a clubfitter, but the problem I have is that most of the club fitters in Singapore only carry certain brands. For example one clubfitter only carries brand X & Y, while another carries only A & B. So i fear that they may only recommend the brands that they carry, and I may not like the shaft.

Any input from you guys?

Which Driver shaft do you like right now? What specs are you using for that shaft?

I'm using the R9. Im using the UST Axivcore black, 68 grams 3.1 torque, and loving it. The problem is that most of the heavier shafts have lower torque.

But from my understanding, the 3wood shaft should have a higher torque? Or am I wrong?

I think it should be other way round... should be lower torque cos the club head is heavier on the Fairway wood thus a lower torque shaft will not "torque" too much on the downswing

Seeing that you are using the UST... Try going to

Yeah tried it.... but for example, it gave me a recommendation for a shaft with 64grams. So it doesnt quite take into consideration what I use for the driver (69 grams).

Ah... i see... Your FW should be heavier with less torque...
Did you click "Distance" for your FW?

The choices you make for the swingfit makes a big difference

ACCRA is doing something interesting in terms of matching driver >> FW >> hybrid shafts.
have a read....

http://www.accragolf.com/shafts/dymatch

Extract:

ACCRA DyMatch Series Technology

Several years of working with the very best players in the world on Professional PGA Tours combined with the commitment to work with the very best Professional Club Fitters in the world is bound to present amazing ideas!

We realized that few Tour Professionals were using the same drivers shaft, fairway wood shaft and hybrid shaft... why? OEM Tour Reps were frustrated as even when they "dialed in" a player to a driver shaft/head combo, they had to start all over with the fairway wood and hybrid! Then we began analyzing what shafts players were using in their drivers, fairway woods and hybrids and we noticed that the majority of players were using stiffer tip/lower torque shafts in their drivers than in their fairway woods! Now, Tour players are not "rocket scientists" but they "feel" everything and know what works!

Well, the same things were happening with the best club fitters with average golfers, right up to the high level amateur players. So then we took a look at the method that every shaft company uses to create driver an fairway wood shafts... We all design cool 55, 65, 75 gram shafts using specific profiles, but as we go from 65 to 75 grams (using the same profile) the tip section tends to get stiffer and the torque usually gets lower! Now lets take a quick break and consider the size and shape of the heads that we are discussing! Consider the size of a driver head and how far the "center of gravity" (sweet spot) is from where the shaft enters the club, then look at a fairway wood and a hybrid.

As you can see the CG moves closer to the point where the shaft enters the club as we move from driver to fairway wood, to hybrid. Therefore we really don't require a stiffer tip or lower torque to maintain stability in the smaller heads (fairway woods and hybrids). The funny thing is, that shaft companies make the heavier (fairway wood) shafts with firmer tip sections and usually lower torque, and then tell club fitters to "tip it" up to 2 inches! This makes little sense, forcing Tour players to find a softer tipped shaft for their fairway woods, usually from a different company!

Interestingly, the Accra aricle above stated that "we noticed that the majority of players were using stiffer tip/lower torque shafts in their drivers than in their fairway woods! Now, Tour players are not "rocket scientists" but they "feel" everything and know what works!"

But if you look at the various manufacturers, the heavier their shaft, the lower their torque.

hmmm... now im totally confused!

This point was also echoed in the last 2 paragraphs, so maybe Accra is on to something here?

bit of a hijack...
am in bit of a confusion myself with driver shafts...

just like to see what swing speed / shaft flex you're using..

from my understanding, as u start swing better you tend to swing it faster..

For me, the ball starts to ballon a little and getting more of the left.

well, my question is.. lol... finally... would u go for a stiffer flex for less dispersion, or is it better for me to get a heavier weigh, lower torque, higher kick point shaft hence getting most out of the regular flex
